ON THE TURNTABLE: Lady Wray - Piece of Me

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Recently released third album from the Virginia based Soul singer. It’s safe to say, Nicole Wray, AKA Lady Wray, has taken her time between albums (her first being released in ’98 and second in ’16), but good things definitely come to those who wait in this instance. The latest offering, ‘Piece of Me’, is, without doubt, her best to date and harks back to Soul, Funk and Hip Hop of yesteryear.

Lady Wray’s voice has matured to that of a classic Soul singer, and she sounds all the better for it. Released on the brilliant Big Crown Records and produced by the superb Leon Michels (of El Michels Affair, who also feature throughout the album), the beats are dusty and heavy, and the Soul is deep. Stand out tracks ‘Come On In’ and ‘Beauty In The Fire’ get a special mention for head-nodding perfection. Buy this album and make your record collection all the better for it.
