Broken Social Scene on ‘Remember The Humans,’ grief and why music still saves us

Broken Social Scene on 'Remember The Humans,' grief and why music still saves people | XS Noize Podcast #284

In the latest episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar is joined by Kevin Drew and Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene.

Kevin and Charles join Mark for a warm, reflective and deeply human conversation about the band’s new album, Remember The Humans — their first new studio album in nearly a decade. You can watch the full video version on the XS Noize YouTube channel below.

Kevin and Charles talk about where the title Remember The Humans came from, and how a joke about AI ended up capturing the emotional centre of the record. They discuss why Broken Social Scene returned now, what it meant to reunite with producer David Newfeld, and how grief, family, friendship and time all shaped the making of the album.

The conversation also explores the “enjoyable PTSD” of getting Broken Social Scene back together, the beauty and difficulty of collaboration, and why the songs have to lead rather than any one person’s ego. Kevin and Charles reflect on tracks including “Not Around Anymore,” “The Call,” “Briefest Kiss” and “Relief,” as well as the documentary It’s All Going To Break and the Toronto music scene that helped shape the band.

At its heart, this episode is about people — the ones who make music, the ones who carry it, and the ones who still need it. As Kevin says during the conversation: “Music is the greatest light that we have.”
