Editors have announced their eighth studio album, Surface, Echo & Sound, set for release on October 30, 2026, via Play It Again Sam.
Alongside the announcement, the band have shared the album’s latest single, “The Rush,” accompanied by an official video shot in Tokyo and directed by Henry Ehara.
The new record follows 2022’s EBM, the band’s collaboration with electronic producer Benjamin John Power, aka Blanck Mass. For Surface, Echo & Sound, Editors returned to a more natural and instinctive way of working, reconnecting with the practice-room approach of their early days.
After several albums created largely as studio projects, the band regrouped in summer 2025 and worked together in Gloucestershire, playing through songs face to face and allowing the material to develop in the room.
Frontman Tom Smith said: “It was a very productive summer. The sun was out for the most part, we were in greenest Gloucestershire, not far from where I live, on this innocuous little industrial estate – it was pretty much the opposite of being in Berghain!”
“The Rush” is described by Smith as an imagined bar scene between two people talking about life, drinking, and reflecting on its highs and lows.
He added: “That idea of finding comfort in people close to me, friends and loved ones and family, is a theme that comes up all the time. It’s a theme that is in everything to a degree.”
The track features Smith on mandolin, an instrument that helps give the album a warmer, more organic core. Guitarist Justin Lockey, who recorded and produced the record, said the mandolin became “a big character” on the album, shaping many of the rhythms alongside the acoustic guitar and drums.
