SICK RECORDS – ALBUM OF THE MONTH

John-Carpenter-Vortex-Sacred-BonesJohn Carpenter – Lost Themes (Sacred Bones)

Lost Themes is a debut album of sorts. It’s the first non-soundtrack material from the legendary 67 year-old film-maker/producer/composer, responsible for classics such as Hallowe’en and Assault On Precinct 13. It’s not a huge departure from his earlier scores, with dark, sinister atmospherics created by trademark synth driven compositions but, free from visuals, these tracks pulse and breathe on their own. Hardly ground-breaking but a fascinating listen.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Murder BalladsNick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Murder Ballads (Mute)

Finally,…. A long-overdue re-issue of Nick Cave’s back catalogue has seen fans clamber to own quality pressings of albums which have been changing hands for exorbitant amounts of money for the last few years. Cave’s re-telling of some of the most gruesome traditional folk songs ever written includes a duet with Kylie Minogue (Where The Wild Roses Grow) but don’t let that put you off. His performance on Stagger Lee, where he inhabits the mind of the vengeful protagonist, is frightening and impressive in equal measure and points the way for the resurgent career which followed.

Aquadolls – Stoked On You (Burger)
Aquadolls – Stoked On You (Burger)

Aquadolls release their debut album on the legendary Burger Records imprint which, in the past, has included Ty Segall, Nobunny, The Black Lips and King Tuff. The blueprint is simple,… 50’s influenced Rock ‘N’ Roll played by an endless line of surf / skate punks but distorted through fuzz pedals to fantastic effect. Opener ‘Don’t Mean Jack’ sounds like Camera Obscura playing Kathleen Hanna’s back catalogue with Joe Meek at the control desk. Genuinely ! The rest of the record more than lives up to that analogy. Simply thrilling, honey !

Sherwood & Pinch – Late Night Endless (On U Sound)Sherwood & Pinch – Late Night Endless (On U Sound)

Late Night Endless is a collaboration between dub veteran Adrian Sherwood and Bristol dubstep king-pin, Rob Ellis. A combination of Ellis’ filthier beats, Sherwood’s hedonistic vibes and some trademark production from fellow Bristolian Shackleton make for an album of fun, floor-filling belters. The whole album seems a little one-dimensional but each track will hold it’s own alongside the strongest Techno or Garage anthems in clubs across the country. Good times !

Axis Of – The Mid Brae Inn (Smalltown America)Axis Of – The Mid Brae Inn (Smalltown America)

Axis Of follow up debut album “St. Kilda” with The Mid Brae Inn, an album that leaves behind the punk abruptness of their early beginnings and veers towards a more mature direction. Rest assured, they’ve lost none of their youthful exuberance and they still know a killer hook when it descends fron the ether, but if I was Simon Neil, I’d rest a little less easy at night after hearing these songs. Axis Of have just become ‘real contenders’.

Om – ‘Live In Belgium 2013’ (Outer Battery)Om – ‘Live In Belgium 2013’ (Outer Battery)

Stunning gold vinyl 2LP release of a live set, recorded in Belgium in 2013. Om’s powerful stoner onslaught isn’t diminished by the rawness of this ‘live’ recording. Still confounding everyone as to how this much sound can be made by two individuals, ‘Live in Belgium’ showcases the intensity of Om’s incredible, funereal drone. Stoner rock lullabies for only the fearless kids.
