Track Of The Day: Squid - 'Houseplants'

One of THE bands to watch in 2019, with this addictive hit of frantically rhythmic post-punk creating much anticipation and excitement for what is to come from this fascinating musical unit. Squid are a five-piece who met at Brighton University. With only a few releases under their belt, they are already fast becoming known for unpredictable styles and maverick combinations.

Singing drummer Ollie Judge comments that the song is about “being able to afford a house and not having to have beans on toast for the week leading up to payday. Pessimistically, I don’t see that future happening, but I still catch myself every now and again thinking it could.” Previous single ‘The Dial’ was a huge critical success, locking the listener into a tight groove as taut Television/Talking Heads-like guitar licks and intense, full-throated vocals click the other pieces of the puzzle into place.

The band’s profile was raised after Speedy Wunderground label boss Dan Carey took the band into the studio, deconstructing and rearranging ‘The Dial’ to give it a contemporary, cutting-edge yet classic and timeless sound. “It was one of the quickest and most fast-paced experiences we’ve had in the studio. Despite feeling nervous we didn’t feel over-rehearsed at all, and then suddenly Dan told us we had the take! There’s such a strong community built around Speedy Wunderground, with no pretension at all. It is something we all admire greatly and are grateful to be a part of it.”

‘The Dial’ was released last year on limited edition 7″ vinyl, which quickly sold out. The band’s excellent, genre-defying debut 3 track EP ‘Lino’ was released in 2017, and two other singles ‘Perfect Teeth’ and ‘Terrestrial Changeover Blues’ are also available to download at their Bandcamp page HERE. Squid are currently working on another EP, due for release at some point this year.
