VIDEO PREMIERE: LAPP fuses flavours of alt-R&B with singer-songwriter sensibility on ‘Ride’ - Watch Now

After gaining some serious acclaim from EARMILK, Tom Robinson, Louder Than War on his debut single Tennessee, LAPP now deviates in style, fusing flavours of alt-R&B production with singer-songwriter sensibility with his debut EP, ‘Farfalla’. Over five tracks, LAPP ranges from electronic R&B soul to stripped back singer-songwriter without ever losing his signature self. The tracks are diverse, yet remain cohesive in style and voice, with LAPP’s stunning vocals as the permanent, powerful centrepiece.

As the first single from the stellar EP, ‘Sunny’, thrives on a relaxed groove that stays constant throughout, leaving plenty of space for his gritty vocals to soulfully meander as he cries out questions of life and love. The use of live saxophone brings a rich and organic element to the track, perfectly complimenting the electronically distorted vocal sample that introduces the track and returns periodically to add extra production punch.

New track ‘Ride’ opens LAPP’s new body of work with a more minimalistic instrumentation. Haunting, reverb-drenched keys stay consistent throughout, accompanied by an ambient soundscape that crescendos as dramatically as it fades away. It is evident that LAPP needs no more than a single instrument and his voice to express emotion and lyrical intention.

As LAPP says, ‘‘Ride’ is about two killers who kill for reasons unknown. The man justifies their actions by wanting to leave their malevolent life behind to find some kind of peace, whilst the woman has become numbed by the actions they have taken. She questions the reasons why her victims fight to stay alive, why she doesn’t share the same fight as them to live on and why herself and her partner have not been punished for the things they have done. As they ride across the country to find solace, their destination becomes ever so clearer.”

Directed by Paul Brooking, the accompanying video’s dusty golden colour palette matches the dreamy sonic aesthetic, juxtaposing the narrative of cold-hearted killers. Brooking gave us an insight into the inspiration behind the visual:

“Luke had a very clear vision for an Americana, desert, ‘No Country For Old Men’ vibe and it totally fitted the song – but not the budget. However, with two great actors and a bit of keen location hunting we created our Mid-West desert feel in Didcot, Oxfordshire on the shortest day of the year. We added in the Polaroid theme as a device to reveal the perverse minds of these two murderers on the run, the slightly odd tension in their relationship resolves in the final moments as they evade capture.”
