ON THE TURNTABLE: Caveman - Positive Reaction

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll be posting my most loved records and most recent purchases right here for your perusal every week.

Debut album from the hugely underrated U.K. Hip Hop trio. Who would’ve thought that one of the best Hip Hop albums of its era would come out of High Wycombe?

Released in ‘91, Caveman’s debut was on constant rotation in my flat when I was just 17. It’s a proper head-nodder, featuring samples from the likes of Hendrix, The J.B.’s and The Jimmy Castor Bunch, amongst many more.

Mark Layman, AKA MCM, was the lyricist and emcee and to say his flow was on point would be a huge understatement. Taking into consideration how young he was, it also has to be applauded that he tackled the issues of racism and inequality on the superb ‘Caught Up’. Elsewhere, as previously mentioned, Hendrix’s ‘Crosstown Traffic’ is sampled on the classic ‘I’m Ready’, and if that doesn’t get you moving, you have no Soul.

Unfortunately, Caveman only released two albums (The Whole Nine Yards & Then Some, the following year), but Mark is still on the scene today, making records and deejaying. If you don’t know, get to know, this is a Hip Hop GEM.
