One of the world’s most iconic bands of the 21st century, Coldplay is set to grace some of Europe’s grandest stages with live electrical performances across some of the biggest events centers and stadiums in countries including Greece, France, Germany, the Netherlands, etc.
As the four-man band consisting of Chris Martin, Johnny Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion gears to set Europe alight with the record-breaking Music of the Spheres Tour, here’s everything you need to know about the tour, the band, previous tour successes, dates, venues and how to get tickets.
Coldplay embarked on the ‘Music of the Spheres’ global tour in 2022 and has since become one of the world’s most sustainable energy tours ever. The band have initiated several energy-reserving approaches such as using electricity-generating bikes, and kinetic dance floors.
The band in a statement reiterated:
“We’re very conscious that the planet is facing a climate crisis. So we’ve spent the last two years consulting with environmental experts to make this tour as sustainable as possible, and, just as importantly, to harness the tour’s potential to push things forward.”
Away from the environmental sustainability of the show, the seven-time Grammy-winning band have broken records and chats since the announcement of their highly anticipated ‘Music of the Spheres Tour ‘
Coldplay joined the Rolling Stones in the Billboard Boxscore to become the second artist to amass a half-billion double-up among the top 10 highest-grossing tours of all time.
The Chris Martin-led band topped Pollstar’s Worldwide Top 100 chart in the first quarter of 2024, earning $100.5 million across thirteen concerts. The Tour became the fourth-highest-grossing trek in 2023 and is gradually approaching the $1 billion mark, a record only held by Pop star, Taylor Swift.
While Taylor Swift holds the record as the first solo artist to reach the $1 billion mark with her Eras Tour concert, Coldplay could become the first band in history to achieve that feat.
It will not be the first time Coldplay will be setting off on an incredible record-breaking tour, the platinum band achieved significant numbers in their ‘A Head Full of Stars’ tour in 2016. With a record ticket sales of $523,033,675, the Tour was the third highest-grossing global tour of all time. The Tour which was the same title for their seventh studio album sold over six million copies since its release in 2015.
The success story of Coldplay cannot be written without going back to the genesis of where it all began– University College London.
With first-class honours in Greek & Latin, Chris first met Jonny, a student of Mathematics during the orientation week and proceeded from there to become a musical duo called ‘Pectoralz’.
Lead bassist of the group, Guy Berryman who studied for just a year in the same college met the duo in Ramsay Hall before they eventually became a music trio with the name Starfish in 1997.
Will Champion, who gained an Anthropology honours in the same College, first joined the trio as a percussionist before harnessing his drumming skills to perfection to eventually become the lead drummer of the group which later became Coldplay.
They embarked on their first ever tour in 2000 after their single ‘Yellow’ shot them to stardom– becoming their first ever Top 5 single. The song was among a list of other songs in their debut album ‘Parachutes’ released in July 2000 that earned them a nomination for the Mercury Music Prize.
Recognition for their exceptional musical prowess portrayed in their debut album was achieved when the band was awarded the Best British Group and Best British Album by the BRIT Awards in 2001.
They went on to record surmountable success with the release of their 2008 album, ‘Viva La Vida’ which became the world’s best-selling album in the year of its release before embarking on ‘Viva la Vida Tour‘.
Year after year, album after album and hit after hit, Coldplay continued to soar in an upward trajectory and in 2011, their ‘Mylo Xyloto’ album won another BRIT Award for the Best British Group for the second and third time in 2012.
Fast forward to 2024 and they are set to delight Coldplayers across Europe, Australia, and New Zealand with pulse-pounding, soul-stirring, adrenaline-fueled performances in the Music of the Spheres Tour as they near a record-breaking 10 million ticket sales.
