The Ballad of North John Street is the brand-new single from Ian Prowse and was given its first play on Janice Long’s show last week. Released on April 19th via Kitchen Disco Records. The single is taken from Ian’s brand-new album ‘Here I Lie’ , which is released via Kitchen Disco Records on April 26th.
Ian Prowse is a singer/songwriter who wears his heart on his sleeve and writes straight from the cuff. ‘Here I Lie’ is a new album of songs that tackle life, love, loss, death and Liverpool.
Ian says ‘We’ve spent the last couple of years taking my first two (re-released) Pele albums all over Europe to celebrate their 25th anniversaries. We only wanted to make a new album if the songs not only stood shoulder to shoulder with our history but was better than we’d ever done before.’
Merseyside hero Prowse formed two successful bands Pele and Amsterdam. Pele released 3 albums on Polydor/M&G Records. Abroad they scored hits in Belgium, Germany, Portugal, Holland and most notably a Number One in South Africa with ‘Megalomania’.
Ian cannot wait to hit the road again with his new material as he explains…
“After spending 2 years celebrating and loving playing my old Pele songs it’s very exciting to be releasing a brand-new album, some old Pele band members have played on this LP and we can’t wait for everyone to hear it. The shows will still include plenty of our Pele & Amsterdam classics as well as these new songs we’re very proud of.”
Recording with the extended Amsterdam band and with guest spots from Nico and Robbo from Pele, this album more than achieves its goals. ‘The passing of time is a prevalent theme on this album, I’ve never gone away, I’ve just kept growing. These songs reflect the stages of my career, some of them wouldn’t sound out of place on a Pele Album, others definitely have a flavour of Amsterdam. The rest? Well that’s me moving forward, word by word, minute by minute.’ Tight words, beautiful arrangements and a Celtic influence that is synonymous with the unique sound of Liverpool, this is a beautiful piece of work that will more than stand the test of time.

“I always come to an Ian Prowse record prepared to learn. It goes without the saying that he will make a beautiful carriage of the music he loves; rock and roll, folk airs and the lessons learned from the Bards of Asbury Park but Ian doesn’t just sing of the here and now but also reaches back into the past for a passionate tale to tell or to sing of a street we may no longer recognize or an injustice that might tell us something about today. This truth is probably the best thing about ‘Here I Lie’ “. ELVIS COSTELLO
