VIDEO PREMIERE: Ghosts of Our Former Selves - Now We’re Talking

London three-piece Ghosts of Our Former Selves are no strangers to musical experimentation. United through a love of song-writing and soul music, the creative trio has never been afraid to push the boundaries of their sound.

Having spent most of the UK’s lockdown writing new material, Ghost Of Our Former Selves return with their second album, ‘Night Church’ set for release later this year. The first single from the album, ‘Sea of People’ explored the impact that a year of lockdown has had on musicians.

Hot on its heels comes new single ‘Now We’re Talking’, a narrative that addresses the trouble that people often have with opening up in relationships. Based on the idea of couple’s therapy, the lyrics challenge the concept of total openness and honesty…

“In terms of the subject matter, it came out of therapy – I was agonising about whether total openness is the way to fix things and also lamenting the loss of the unspoken magic that we sometimes have with someone.”

An expression of the band’s love of classic songwriting, ‘Now We’re Talking’ is more pop-leaning than much of their previous work, with influences from both the early ’80s (The Police, Don Henley, Steve Winwood) and also contemporary synth/guitar artists like The War On Drugs.

“We wanted to write a classic sounding, tightly structured song and we changed our sound a little – we were listening to a lot of Police records and we used picked electric guitar with syncopated drums on the verses especially with them in mind.”

The band are releasing two recordings of the song simultaneously with a full studio version and a stripped back skimmed piano and vocal version alongside it. The latter recording was an after-thought, but the personal nature of the song’s poignant lyrics combined with Brehony’s emotive vocal warranted its release alongside the official recording.

‘Now We’re Talking’ is released alongside a beautifully shot performance music video that showcases the full band together after a year of separation during Lockdown, and is a glimpse of what is to come when they release their new record at the end of August – Watch BELOW:
