TRACK PREMIERE: Etacas – Sin Eater

Etacas

Etacas are UK duo Rob Reng and Jefferson Duke, and here they tell us about their new single, Sin Eater.

How Was The Song Recorded (what was the process like, who was it recorded with, how was the track created)?

We are children of the internet, so our creation process is rarely done together. We have a process where Rob’s many musical sketches are shared, typically containing drum, bass, and synth ideas in a rough arrangement. Jefferson then adds vocals, melodies, lyrics and guitars, which are then batted back to Rob for further production, mixing and mastering. Our WhatsApp chat relating to our music is off the scale – we’ve never been this in touch with anyone about anything!..
…then whenever we do meet face to face, it’s like being in a room with two hyperactive children

What Inspired You To Write / Create The Track?

Musically, we were both interested in the pulsating, bubbling side of disco blended with new order-esque guitar lines, combined with a euphoric ‘taking on the world’ style chorus. Rob sent over an initial skeleton that inspired Jefferson to tell the story of falling for a Sin Eater. Lyrically, we’ve always enjoyed writing from other people’s perspectives, as well as setting songs from different periods in history. The track was inspired by a family member who told us about Sin Eating, which we found fascinating and thought there was enough here for a song. To write about the ritual wasn’t enough, so we wrote from the POV of two Sin Eaters who are outcast by society and fall in love.

What Is The Message You Wish Listeners To Take Away From The Track?

When you find someone who supports and understands you, that can give you the strength to believe you can take on the world.

How did you get into music?

We’ve both been musical and multi-instrumentalists since early childhood. Rob was very much into electronic and dance music and indeed already had a successful career as a breakbeat DJ/Producer with multiple plays on Radio 1, and a DMC worldwide breaks charts number 1 single. Jefferson was much more on the guitar-led side and took his loop pedal live show to great heights and wide acclaim. Together, we are a modern-day force to be reckoned with!

Do you have any gigs/tours planned in the future? Where?

We will be touring in 2024 – no specific dates as yet.
