Track of the Day: Heldinky - Arms

Heldinky’s new single ‘Arms’, is taken from their debut album ‘Miles to Go Before I Sleep’ and provides an introduction to the trio ahead of the release of their new album in 2017.

Based in north Wales, the band have been described by one reviewer as playing “intense, dark and hauntingly beautiful music” and elsewhere their sparse intensity has been likened to the original PJ Harvey trio. The album sleeve was designed by artist Peter Holloway RCA.

Singer, guitarist and primary songwriter Helena Palombo grew up in south London, listening to the likes of Tim Buckley, Annete Peacock, Elisabeth Frazer and Kate Bush, before relocating to north Wales. She performed previously as a solo artist, playing at gigs and festivals around the UK before coming together with drummer Mike McMahon and bass player Ian Warburton to form the current Heldinky line up.

Heldinky have developed a sparse, taut and atmospheric style, stripped of all superfluous ornamentation, where the spaces become as important as the notes. Their music has been endorsed by celebrated singer/songwriter and guitarist from Be Bop Deluxe, Bill Nelson, who praised their cover of one of his songs. Heldinky’s aesthetic is an incredibly important aspect of the project. They recently worked with BAFTA award winning animator Hywel Griffiths to create their second band video ‘Time’.

The band are currently working on their second album, which aims to be as varied as their first, including woozy guitar tracks, avant guard instrumentals and haunting ballads.
