ON THE TURNTABLE: Chip Wickham – Cloud 10

Chip Wickham - Cloud 10

Short, sharp and frank reviews from a confessed vinyl junkie. I’ll post my most loved records and recent purchases here for your perusal weekly.

‘And the award for Best Sunday listening Album of the Year goes to….’. It may be a little early in the year to be handing out such prestigious awards, but my money is on Chip Wickham’s ‘Cloud 10’ to be doing just that.

I’m currently sitting listening to it on a Sunday, and it’s absolute bliss. Chip is originally from Brighton but studied in Manchester, where he became a part of Matthew Halsall’s ensemble; he is now an artist in his own right and has just released said album on Halsall’s brilliant Gondwana label. The album is part Spiritual Jazz, where you can hear influences from artists such as Yusef Lateef, but also very much contemporary too, with a nod to Jazzanova and Robert Glasper.

It was only released on Friday (9th September), but it glides along so smoothly it warrants immediate repeats as soon as it’s finished. This is gorgeous music played beautifully by someone who’s in it for the long game.
