Mae Stephens recently told followers that she thought she had written “the delulu song of the summer” and today’s release of the new single ‘Delusional’ proves that she was correct. It comes as she has spent recent weeks translating her fiercely loyal online following into real world connection with a packed headline tour, a special guest appearance at G-A-Y, and a set at the first UK edition of the Anti Social Camp showcase.
As we’ve come to expect from Mae, she puts everything into ‘Delusional’ – that soulful vocal gift, her diaristic desire to share every inner thought and her whirlwind of personality. The result is pure pop fun, with a sweet piano melody and swooping, intricately crafted vocal harmonies making for an instant earworm of a song. As for the lyrics? Well, we’ve all been delusional about someone – but you just don’t tend to realise how far you’ve gone until it’s over.
Mae says, “‘Delusional’ was written by myself and the incredible OSKI. Written on less than an hour of sleep we truly felt delusional writing this track! The song is about being so infatuated by someone that you would stoop to delusional levels to gain their affection. There are heavy themes in this track of obsession, denial and stalking which are very prominent in the second verse. I had so much fun creating this track and definitely feel that it pulled me out of my comfort zone on the songwriting side.
OSKI has an incredible ear for harmonies and played a massive hand in creating each layer of the incredible chorus and backing vocals. I cannot wait for everyone to hear the full version and I truly hope you love it as much as we loved creating it!”
The accompanying video matches the sheer fun factor of the song. You can’t take your eyes off of Mae’s magnetic performance, which is set in a Technicolour alternate reality that recalls the B*Witched ‘C’est La Vie’ aesthetic – a neat metaphor for realising you’re not quite living in reality. ‘Delusional’ was written by Mae Stephens with the track’s producer, solo artist OSKI.
Alongside ‘Delusional’ comes confirmation of a new UK headline tour in partnership with Music Venue Trust. Mae’s recent singles have seen her apply her unstoppable charisma across a diverse and accomplished spectrum of sounds. Those songs have taken her from funk-heavy female empowerment (‘Woah Man!’) and a tongue-in-cheek take on dealing with intrusive thoughts (‘Tiny Voice’), to learning to stand up for yourself (‘Done With U’) and a modern take on Motown-style heartache (‘Blue’). That latter song was highlighted with a performance for the Grammy Awards’ Global Spin initiative.
Those tracks represent a new stage of momentum for Mae. Her back story is stranger-than-fiction: she quickly went from dreaming big in the ordinary surroundings of a job in ASDA to landing international #1s, Gold certifications and 400 million+ streams with her breakthrough hit ‘If We Ever Broke Up’. Soon she was either in the studio or sharing stages with big names as varied as BLACKPINK, P!NK, Meghan Trainor, The Chainsmokers, Tom Grennan and Alok.
