Joe Bedell-Brill and Georgie Hoare are 0171. Today the duo are sharing their new single “Automatic”. A pensive, surrealist study into nihilism as a means to counter unease, 0171 are breaking down societal conundrums, all played out to a backdrop of experimental electro-pop. Moving at an inevitable pace, “Automatic” sweeps you up as it drives through a world where feelings are blunt and nothing matters except not thinking about the future.
“Our music can make us feel so powerful, and at other times lost and anxious – so the songs reflect that – a disorientating mix of confidence and sadness” Joe and Georgie explain. They also went on to share this on the new single: “In ‘Automatic’ we are moving endlessly onwards, away from our own anxieties – fragile mother of pearl kids in the whirlwind. We choose a defiant nihilism over anxiety, no matter the cost. And when everything clears around us, we have just each other left.”
“Automatic” is lifted from 0171’s second (as-yet-untitled) EP, the follow up to their widely acclaimed ( Dazed, Noisey/VICE, The Fader, i-D, Gorilla vs Bear, Highsnobiety, etc) debut EP Red Light.

0171’s new material was borne out of frustration, feelings of stasis, the struggle between clinging on to what brings you down, and just letting go. Through the tracks, their voices and tone weave and shift, reflecting erratic feelings and contradictions. “We are disorientated by the complex way we feel when we write. In ‘Automatic’, many of the lyrics are positive and seductive, but the song has an angry edge,” the pair added.
Serious and unusual lyrics over seductive melodies and exhilarating, maximal sound, the tone is nihilistic, yet suggests there is something thrilling about just not thinking.
0171 will continue to release new music throughout 2020, with their second EP due in the Autumn.
