Killing Eve

They say you should never meet your heroes. I have to disagree with that following an awesome show at Night People in Manchester. A bit of background, I am a bassist and learned to play to a lot of the late 80s and  90s bands. Two of these were the Mission and All About Eve. It’s interesting that in the age of social media, it’s easy to connect with people, and for about a year I had been chatting to the bass player from both bands, Andy Cousin, who has formed a new band with Anne Marie Hurst of Skeletal Family called Killing Eve.

The venue itself is a great basement affair, which exudes a goth vibe to it- and very friendly staff on the door and at the bar. First on stage is Grooving In Green, who proceeded to impress with post-punk goodness that I would liken to a combination of The Mission and Sisters of Mercy. It was very enjoyable indeed, this is a band who clearly have a good effect on the crowd and have excellent stage presence and a gorgeous female bassist who plays the Rickenbacker bass like it was meant to be played.

Cold In Berlin was next up and this band were impressive, to say the least. The singer performs something akin to musical theatre, mixing with the crowd and singing to some of them, fortunately, I was not chosen as it would have made me a little scared! They are heavy as that is the style which befits the singer, she has a power and presence that most singers can only dream of. A fantastic show.

The headliners Killing Eve did not disappoint, playing an animated show with real flair and tightness. it’s clear that they love what they are doing, and the music itself is superb- I would call it edging on the experimental at times, but with a clear direction as a new rock act. Would definitely recommend seeing them if you can.

A superb night then all in all- I even managed to chat to Andy Cousin (first time we had met in person) and it’s great to see the enthusiasm and superb playing is still very much alive from a veteran of the music scene that influenced me so much.

Keep it up, guys!
