LITANY shares the video for new single ‘Adult Movies’ - Watch Now

Adding denser layers of synths and echoes of Robyn and Metronomy to her confessional alt-pop, the artist and songwriter Litany has evolved her sound without compromising her identity. It has resulted in two of her strongest tracks to date, ‘Sleepover’ and ‘Cream’, alongside ongoing recognition from new music champions NME, The Line of Best Fit, Metro, Clout, 1883, Euphoria, Consequence of Sound and Atwood. The next step for the newly levelled up Litany comes today as she shares her brand new single ‘Adult Movies’ from her new EP of the same name, which is also out now.

Produced by Fyfe and co-written with James New, Litany has a gift for painting specific memories as if she’s commenting on them live, which makes ‘Adult Movies’ engaging from its very first line. Two friends are drunk, high and watching adult movies ironically, which inevitably leads to more intimacy than either of them had planned. And then lust leads to love in the most unexpected of ways. It’s a song that feels like the story to ‘Sleepover’ told from a different perspective.

Litany says, “Neither I or my best friend had voiced that we’d been harbouring feelings for one another in the months leading up to New Year’s Eve but introduce a load of drink, kitchen scissor haircuts and soft porn movies and naturally we ended up sleeping together (it was awesome). A few days later, I was just sat smiling in bed recalling all the cute and crazy shit we did that night, applied a melody and a couple hours later ‘Adult Movies’ was born.”

The ‘Adult Movies’ EP features all three singles alongside the brand-new tracks ‘The End’ and ‘Happy Anniversary’. ‘The End’ is pure fragility in the form of a song, its super-specific references (Daniel Johnston’s ‘True Love Will Find You In The End’, the Sega racing game ‘Crazy Taxi’) making it all the more personal. It’s also Litany’s most dramatic song to date, leaping from the glacial synth-pop of its first half to a cacophonous conclusion. Whereas, ‘Happy Anniversary’ has a simple soundscape to tell a tragic tale.

She adds, “I see every track on this EP as a three minutes(ish) long audiobook of pivotal moments in my past two serious relationships. Lyrically I wanted each song to muster a vivid scene in people’s heads so I tried to really hone in on each detail that made those moments unique to me and my situation. I called it ‘Adult Movies’ because that’s kinda what they are collectively; little audio movies of my adult love life – get your minds out the gutter!”

Recent weeks have seen Litany extend her love of gaming (often referenced in her lyrics) for her PlayLIT chat show series on YouTube. It’s a simple premise: Litany interviews a special guest as they compete in a ‘Mario Kart’ tournament. Guests so far have included her ‘Playlist’ collaborator Oscar Scheller, Flyte and Billie Marten.

Litany recently returned to live shows with a sold-out night at the Jazz Cafe, which saw her joined by the Her Ensemble for a performance of ‘Cream’. She’s now to headline her biggest London show to date at the Scala on September 30th. The line-up features special guests Millie Turner and Tayo Sound, and tickets are available here.
