KULA SHAKER announce first single of 2023 (WAVES out 28 July)

In July 2022, Kula Shaker was journeying back from a barnstorming sell-out show in Manchester. After four years of silence, last summer saw the band play across the world, from Liverpool to Tokyo. As they travelled, an idea was planted in singer Crispian Mills‘ mind, which began to grow in scale. The seed of the idea became ‘WAVES’, the first single from Kula Shaker’s soon-to-be 7th studio album.

Further inviting the muse, organ wizard Jay Darlington returned to Kula Shaker after over a decade of playing with Oasis and various Gallaghers, which proved to be the catalyst for new impetus. When Jay heard ‘WAVES’, he grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and added his unmistakable musical imprint, swirling Hammond organ riffs from the get-go, not heard on a Kula record since the days of ‘Hush’. Further powered by the band’s legendary rhythm section, Alonza Bevan (bass) and Paul Winter-Hart (drums) and elevated by a euphoric backing vocal arrangement by Mills, within just a few hours, a great song became a great record.

Since they shot to fame with their debut album ‘K’ in 1996, Kula Shaker’s musical output has been notoriously stop/start (for good reason, Crispian has a 2nd career as a successful film director), but with the newly reformed line-up, there is a sense of excitement and an upward momentum within everything they are doing. Evident in the news that their 7th album will be released less than a year since their 6th.

‘WAVES’ is a relentless burst of excitement that could be sung on the terraces of those football-mad cities in the lyrics (come on, Durham United!). ‘WAVES’ is a song of optimism, and Kula Shaker are spreading their message that the future belongs to Love. This is Kula Shaker ’23 in a startling return to form, inviting everyone to come to their incredible live shows, where satisfaction is guaranteed for all.
