Already nearing ‘legend’ status himself in the music city of Liverpool, people-powered singer-songwriter, Jamie Webster nods to the heroes of the past in an evocative live performance, titled Dockumentary, filmed amidst the unregenerated remnants of the city’s industrial past. Sitting between crumbling warehouses on the quayside of the Salisbury Dock, Webster hooked up with drummer, Jim Sharrock, for five special songs that purposely hark back to the Liverpool’s working-class past and musical heritage.
Filmed before the COVID-19 crisis hit, during the colder months of late winter, Webster’s short film is reminiscent of The La’s most famous, live TV performance, running through their biggest, international hit, There She Goes, at the famous Albert Dock. The La’s hit the screens of local viewers in the North West of England, tuning in to Granada Reports in 1990, playing in front of the dramatic backdrop of the Mersey at twilight.
The release of the full Dockumentary comes after Webster teased live performances from the docks of his popular singles Living For Yesterday and Something’s Gotta Give over recent weeks. The film’s tracklisting is completed with low-key, yet impassioned run-throughs of unreleased album tracks We Get By and The Joker, plus a cover of The La’s own Timeless Melody.
Humbled by comparisons to bands like both The La’s and Shack, Webster’s ‘heart on his sleeve’ approach to songwriting is reflected in an unashamed tribute, not only to a legendary moment in Liverpool music history but to the history of the city itself as a place of industry, honest toil and a gateway to the world’s open seas.
