Izo FitzRoy’s recent album ‘A Good Woman’ was a tour de force, her stunning vocal elegance and engaging lyrical talking points standing atop a vibrant blend of timeless soul, classic R&B and vigorous funk. The album was greeted with a wealth of airplay support, especially from Radio 2 and Jazz FM, as well a surge of critical acclaim. Now Izo provides her first new music since the release of the album as she shares the new single ‘Body of Mine’.
‘Body of Mine’ was recorded during sessions for ‘A Good Woman’, but it was reluctantly left off the final album as it has a very different mood to the rest of the record. Switching between gritty soul and a sweet falsetto, Izo’s voice is again undeniable as she explores the vices and thrills of substances – what feels good in the moment so often isn’t what’s best for you in the long term. The song’s luscious instrumentation, super smooth production and pop-leaning jazzy tones was inspired by Burt Bacharach, and ‘Body of Mine’ took on a greater emotional resonance after one of the music’s all-time greats passed away earlier this year.
Izo says, “‘Body Of Mine’ was written in 2020 in the throes of the pandemic when I was stuck at home listening to a lot of Roberta Flack and Burt Bacharach records from the late ‘60s. I wanted to create a song with the foundational elements of jazz, soul and bossa nova to accompany fairly dry and comedic lyrics about a complicated relationship with drugs and alcohol.”

A new ‘making of’ documentary provides an engaging insight into the story behind the two-year process of creating the album ‘A Good Woman’. Featuring interview footage with Izo and the album’s producer Oscar De Jong as well as studio and session footage, the film presents a deep dive into the experience. Starting with Izo’s collaboration with Kraak & Smaak in 2019, the story takes us from the UK and into sessions in Leiden in the Netherlands, with Izo reflecting upon how the songs were written, the importance of the warmth provided by the use of live instrumentation and soaring gospel harmonies, as well as the themes that she explores throughout the set.

Izo has recently demonstrated a different take on ‘A Good Woman’ with remixes of two of its most popular tracks. Moods has infused ‘Give Me The High’ with a new flavour which naturally fits Izo’s own styles, drawing upon elements of jazztronica and hip-hop. Meanwhile, Sam Redmore has taken the funk of ‘Chasing Days’ to new levels, boosting its vibrant live feel with energising electronic flourishes. Expect further remixes to follow soon.
After selling out London’s Jazz Cafe in advance earlier this year, Izo will return to the storied venue this September to fulfil strong demand for tickets with a second headline show on September 5th – tickets are available here.
