“RUIN MY DAY, the latest single from blondestandard, aka Caroline Grace Vein, is a liberating song about standing up for oneself and not letting others influence how we feel about ourselves.

Born and raised in the vibrant cultural landscape of LA, blondestandard’s musical journey took an unexpected detour when, after releasing her first two singles, she was diagnosed with cancer. Through two years of adversity, she channelled her creativity into writing and recording during her treatment, deepening her craft and connection to music.

Her sound, a dynamic fusion of alternative rock tinted by pop flavours with pop and boosted by funk grooves, reflects the depth of blondestandard’s eclectic influences and the evolution of her sound.

In 2024, she released her comeback track, “FREAKIN OUT,” followed by “RUIN MY DAY.” Both songs reveal the unbreakable spirit of a woman who has faced her darkest moments and emerged stronger.

XS Noize spoke with blondestandard to delve into the inspiration behind “RUIN MY DAY,” how the song came together, and immersing herself in the creative process.

How would you describe your own music?

Genre-wise, it definitely leans into the alternative rock space, with a touch of pop and funk. It is a perfect representation of all the kinds of music I enjoy listening to!

Tell us more about “RUIN MY DAY.” What was your experience of making it?

‘RUIN MY DAY’ is a bit of a run-on from my last single ‘FREAKIN OUT,’ which is an empowerment anthem. ‘RUIN MY DAY’ is about wiping the dust off your shoulders and telling someone to ‘try me,’ but that you won’t let them ruin your day or your mood, and you’ll keep it moving!

Can you share the inspiration behind “RUIN MY DAY” and the creative process involved in bringing it to life?

I think that with the age of social media and the ‘big city mentality’ of living in a place like Los Angeles, it is very difficult not to allow others’ thoughts and opinions to affect the way you feel about yourself. The inspiration of this song is not allowing the opinions and thoughts of others to get to you. The creative process was pretty simple. Once the hook/chorus came to me, my producer and I were working on the instrumental side, and I blurted out ‘GO AHEAD AND RUIN MY DAY BABY’ – he turned around and was like ‘Yup that’s rad.’

What was your main focus with “RUIN MY DAY”? What did you want to try and achieve with this track?

I really want to empower others with my music as well as talk about specific lessons I have learned or am currently learning as a young woman!

How did you get started in music? What’s the back story there?

I have always been passionate about music, but I kept my singing and writing to myself until the pandemic. I had been working in music for a few years at that point and asked a producer friend of mine if he would work on some music with me. Coming from me, even he was shocked to hear that! I immediately became so drawn to creating music of my own and then released ‘BLUE EYES’ about a year after! The rest is history.

What’s the story behind the name ‘blondestandard?’

The name itself is a bit ironic—as I do look like the standard blonde—but the point of the irony is to look beyond what someone appears to be, not judge a book by its cover, but rather what lies underneath.

What can you share about your writing process?

I am a storyteller, so I always begin with an idea in mind. I immediately usually know what sonic direction I want to take, and I get in the studio to craft the instrumental and come up with the melodies, then write the lyrics after that! But it always begins with a story!

Now, I do want to ask as well, what’s been the highlight of your career so far? Maybe touring or who you’ve played with, something that’s really stood out.

Honestly, the most exciting part of my career so far is the positive feedback I have gotten from others. It’s mostly kind messages from people, both those I know and those I have never met! Creating music can be so vulnerable, and knowing that others are connecting with my art and message is truly such a good feeling.

Which do you enjoy the most: writing, recording, practising, or playing live?

I love recording. The process of seeing my art come to life and then listening to it is indescribable!

Knowing what you know now, if you could go back and start your music career all over, what would you do differently?

I wouldn’t do anything differently – I believe in process and growth, and I definitely would not be the artist I am today if I had not gone through the experiences I have gone through!

Based on your own experiences and lessons learned, what guiding principles or words of wisdom would you share with aspiring artists looking to carve out their path in music?

I know it seems so intimidating to start making music, but just leaning in and allowing yourself to tap into the creative process is the hardest part. It seems crazy, but it’s true! Once you allow yourself to let your guard down, it becomes easy from there. And the more you do it, the more naturally it comes.

What’s next for you?

I have been working on lots of exciting music and really finding my sound. Lots of new music is on the way!
