FIDLAR and The Flaming Lips collaborate on 'Punks' video - Watch

LA quartet FIDLAR have shared a new video for ‘Punks’. Created in collaboration with fellow DIY-minded band The Flaming Lips, the dystopian clip follows a working class protagonist’s ill-fated journey to outer space to join an elite group of super chromosome money making power plants. Watch the music video for “Punks” BELOW.

FIDLAR were approached by members of The Flaming Lips after spontaneously covering ‘Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1’ at a show in Oklahoma City, OK. While hanging out at the band’s psychedelic art space “The Womb” after the show, a mutual admiration for each other’s DIY music videos lead to the decision to join forces on the clip. The video for ‘Punks’ was directed and produced by longtime FIDLAR collaborator Ryan Baxley, FIDLAR bassist Brandon Schwartzel, and Flaming Lips collaborators Zachary Ryan Cox, George Salisbury, Tom Hudson, and Travis Pierce.

“Getting to make a video at The Womb using all of The Flaming Lips’ resources was a dream come true,” offered Schwartzel. “We had their entire warehouse at our disposal and there were always a bunch of ‘freaks’ hanging around offering to help us make cool stuff. There doesn’t seem to be that much to do in Oklahoma City, so if you’re a weird art kid, you’re probably going to end up hanging out with The Flaming Lips. Something I really like about both of our bands is the preference for friends over professionals. Getting your friends together, giving them a job to do, and then watching them excel at it is super cool,” elaborated Schwartzel.

FIDLAR also announced an autumn headlining tour of the US with support from SWMRS and The Frights. The band’s “Too Much Tour” will kick off on October 28 in San Diego, CA and wrap on November 22 in Denver, CO. Having produced the 2016 debuts of both support bands, FIDLAR frontman Zac Carper offered, “After spending so much time with these guys in the studio, I can’t wait to bring them out on the road. They’re like our little brothers. We’ve got FIDLAR from LA, SWMRS from Oakland, and The Frights from San Diego. We’re dragging the whole damn state of California across the US for this one!” Tickets for FIDLAR’s Too Much Tour are on sale this Friday 6/17 and available HERE.

FIDLAR’s autumn US tour is preceded by a handful of performances at various summer festivals in the US including Bonnaroo, Mo Pop Festival, and Lollapalooza. The band will also perform at numerous UK/European festivals including T in the Park, Way Out West, and Oya Festival. The band will also perform headline shows in London, Paris, Amsterdam, and Cologne. A complete list of upcoming FIDLAR tour dates can be found HERE.

Since forming in 2009, FIDLAR quickly became one of the Los Angeles music scene’s most celebrated live acts thanks to their raucous live shows, which often concluded with the majority of audience members joining the band on-stage. Since formation, the band has toured the world and played with The Pixies, The Hives, Black Lips, OFF!, Jeff The Brotherhood, The Orwells, Wavves, The Delta Spirit and more. Their debut self-titled full-length album was released in the U.S. in January of 2013 and debuted at #5 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, #2 on the Alternative News Artist Chart and was the #1 most added release at CMJ. Rolling Stone immediately called FIDLAR “a band to watch”, asserting, “FIDLAR redefines the ‘Golden State’ skate/garage punk aesthetic for contemporary tastes” and called Too “an excellent second LP.”
