Bill Ryder-Jones + The Lost Brothers Release Leonard Cohen tribute video

The Lost Brothers unveil The Bird Dog Tapes, a new series of releases taken from their studio vaults. Volume 1 is a semi-covers album that features Bill Ryder-Jones and The Coral’s Nick Power.

The Lost Brothers, Oisin Leech and Mark Mccausland, have announced Bird Dog Tapes. This will be a series of releases taken from the Lost Brothers studio vaults after nearly ten years of recording and touring together.

Presented here is the first in the series, Volume1. It was recorded in Spring 2014, when The Lost Brothers, Bill Ryder-Jones, Nick Power (The Coral) and drummer Jack Prince found themselves with a day to kill in Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios, so decided to bash out a few tunes together for fun. This album is the result of a single day in the studio.

Produced by Bill Ryder-Jones, the song selections include cover versions of some of their favourite songs and artists, and a few originals too. Bill and the Lost Brothers also cover each other’s songs, with the Lost Brothers singing Bill’s “By The Morning I” and Bill returning the favour by singing a Lost Brothers song “Stones Throw”. Nick Power has two originals on the album, “Times a Ghost” and “Sleeping in my Car”, and the opening track, “Old Place of Mine” is a Lost Brothers original, written while the microphones were being set up around them for the session.

It was all recorded completely live and mixed straight to tape, unplanned, unrehearsed and unadorned. “This is not an official new album or anything like that” explains Oisin Leech from The Lost Brothers. “It’s just a few pals singing some of their favourite tunes except someone left the tape rolling.”
Among the covers on the album is a version of Leonard Cohen’s “So Long Marianne”, which the group would like to offer up as a tribute to Mr. Cohen, who was one of their all-time favourite artists.
This album is like an old photograph, a moment captured in time, and a thing of rare beauty.

The Lost Brothers are currently recording in Tucson Arizona with Howe Gelb and members of the legendary indie band Giant Sand. Details of this release will emerge in 2017.

“The Bird Dog Tapes Vol 1” is out December 7th 2016 on Bird Dog and available at http://thelostbrothers.bigcartel.com
