XS Noize and Painted Halo Records are passionate advocates for new music and are delighted to provide a platform for emerging artists in the form of XS Unsigned, a feature showcasing brand new talent cherry-picked from submissions by XS Noize Founder/Editor Mark Millar and Painted Halo’s boss Ivan Marziano. Great news for all you audiophiles out there, but more importantly for those whose voices deserve to be lifted from the crowd. This time it’s the turn of Linda Em.
Meet the Artist:
Personal journeys, artistic journeys. Life very much informs the music and words of Linda Em, a Waterford, Ireland born, London-transplanted singer, whose EP London Irish has recently been released by highly respected label Talking Elephant. The latest offering is a giant leap from folksy debut Shadow Lands, in no small part thanks to the efforts of Gavin Glass (John Grant, Lisa Hannigan) at the producer’s helm. Perhaps Glass’s biggest contribution is to understand the value of Linda Em’s voice as an instrument and to give it space to build up the lyrical tension. Stand-out track Two Hands was however recorded by Rupert Gillet, and the sparse but essential arrangements are reminiscent of Bonnie Prince Billy’s finer moments, signalling a shift towards more Americana-based influences. The results are a timeless melange which is a result of Linda Em’s unique heritage and musical identity.
“As a lyricist, I’m telling a story and, through working with producer Gavin Glass, I think the musical side reflects and illustrates that. Gavin has managed to give the songs and sound a strong cohesiveness even though the songs are all written with different people,” says Linda Em. While Linda Em cites Janis Joplin, Edith Piaf and Nina Simone as influences, she is surprised and flattered when Sandy Denny is mentioned and yet the raw rootsy, style of the much-beloved Fairport Convention singer is a natural reference point.
Linda hopes to go back to the studio next year, and we are very much looking forward to her next release. Definitely, one to watch.
