Liam Gallagher and John Squire joined Zane Lowe on New Music Daily on Apple Music 1 to discuss their newly released song, ‘Just Another Rainbow’, and how it came out of a riffing session. The pair also talk about their chemistry, how they came together to create music, and what fans can expect from their upcoming album.

Liam Gallagher on the song ‘Just Another Rainbow’ coming easy off of a riff…
That one did come easy. It just grew out of a riff. The first one. It grew like bamboo. It’s all to do with John. He wrote everything.

Liam Gallagher on working with John Squire…
I had no doubt that they were going to be f*cking cool. I had no doubt the music said it all. The clothes said it all, the attention to detail. I knew there was going to be no clowns in that band. So it was easy. It was all about me, not acting like a c***.

Liam Gallagher on how they came together and John Squire telling him he was writing songs…
John had played with us with Oasis, and then when we’ve met we’ve gone on tour with the Seahorses and stuff, and I wouldn’t say we were mates, you know what I mean? We sort of just knew each other. We were pleasant with each other, and we’d seen each other, and that was all; we had a bit of a shoe fetish going down. We always talk about shoes and where’d you get them from, blah, blah. And then going back to making these songs. I remember John just going, “Look, I’m back to writing songs and that again,” which made me happy regardless of me singing on him or anything. He’s doing songs again and playing the guitar and obviously plays everything, so these songs come my way and I was double pleased to sing them. I love them. And I think John’s a songwriter who’s just equally as good as he is playing a guitar. And I’m sure people know that anyway, but it’s nice if more people get to know it.

Liam and John on what fans can expect from their upcoming album…
Liam Gallagher: There are 10 [songs] on the album, but we’ve done eight. We demoed eight of them in John’s studio and then John done another two songs and we recorded them for the first time. Sang them for the first time out in America in LA. [The album] It hasn’t got a title as such. It’s just Liam and John, like Liam Gallagher and John Squire, really.
John Squire: It’s too late. We forgot about a title. It’s all been printed.
Liam Gallagher: The next one will have one now.

Liam on recording the songs in three weeks in Greg Kurstin’s studio…
These songs are amazing, and they’re all great and all that. So yeah, when he asked us to sing on him, I was in. And then three come along, and then another three come along. Before you knew it, I was up in Macclesfield demoing him at John’s house, and then I went on tour. I met him in LA at Greg’s studio, and then we whacked some out in about three weeks.

John Squire on playing guitar and making the songs with Liam in mind…
John Squire: I live on a hill, and I do see a lot of rainbows from there when they’re available. Well, it just came out that I didn’t have a particular urge or need to write a song that was about disappointment, but it scans that way on first listen. But I find it one of the most uplifting tracks on the album.
Zane Lowe: Yeah, it’s a perfect balance between the two. It’s my favorite sh*t. The songs that make me want to climb a mountain whilst I also feel like I’m at the bottom of it.

Liam Gallagher on going on tour…
We’ve got a bass player, we’ve got a drummer, we’ve got a keyboard player on hold and that if we need it, we’re going to try and tackle it without a keyboard player then piano player and give it a bit of b*llocks, mate, a bit of rawness to it. But if it needs it, it needs it. But yeah, we’re going out on tour. We’re going to go and do some gigs, see what happens, and try to inspire people and make people happy. That’s it really. And then do another one.
