INTERVIEW: Liv Hanna on her latest single ‘Lovers In The Night’

Liv Hanna

Liv Hanna first discovered her love of music at eight when her multi-instrumentalist father inspired her to start learning the piano. Now, more than a decade later, she’s an established talent in her own right, creating songs with a catchy and, at times, a thought-provoking blend of indie, pop and R&B.

Her latest single, “Lovers In The Night”, showcases her impressive vocal and song-writing abilities and a track that reminds people of what it’s like to be in your own world and not care about the thoughts or actions of others who might be watching and judging. XS Noize caught up with Liv to talk about her career, discover how she feels about social media and learns which song she will share with the world next.

Has music always been the career path you wanted to follow, or did you have other ambitions growing up? Who or what ultimately made you think: ‘This is what I want to do’?

Yes, music has always been my desired career path. I think always being surrounded by music in my family life contributed to my passion for it. I was introduced to various genres when I was really young, and that exposure helped shape me into the person I am today. I just always knew!

Which artists and bands are you most influenced and inspired by? Have those influences changed much over the years, or do you find yourself returning to the same ones when you sit down to write a song or head to the studio to record?

I am most influenced by female pop icons such as Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Lady Gaga. They each have their own original unique style and have all succeeded on their own creative terms.

You attend the University of Miami, Frost School of Music – how is that helping you develop your skills, and what is it teaching/has it taught you about the music industry?

Frost has helped me tremendously to grow as an artist and find my voice as a performer. I participate in ensemble classes as well as theory and technology classes in a very immersive and creative environment.

How did the pandemic impact you personally and professionally, and how would you say that hindered or helped your career and artistic focus?

The pandemic most definitely contributed to my growth as an artist. I needed that time to reset, mature and grow as a person too. As strange as it sounds, the quarantine of Spring 2020 was the best and most cathartic few months for me. I spent an absurd amount of time alone in virtual isolation away from my classmates, allowing me to think, feel and compose music. This led to writing many songs, which have been released in the past two years, with more to come!

Tell me about your new single, “Lovers In The Night.” Where did the idea for it come from?

The idea ‘Lovers In The Night’ reflected my lifestyle after recently moving to Miami.

Why, of the songs you’ve written, did you decide to release this one in particular?

I felt like the most appropriate time for “Lovers in the Night” to be released was in the summer, as it’s a fun, upbeat, pop track touching on flings, going out, and having a good time. The song’s upbeat energy matches the fun, electric vibes of summertime!

What was it like working with co-producers Guy Eckstine and Paul Pesco, the latter of which has worked with Madonna and Jennifer Lopez on the song? What did they bring to the creative process?

Guy Eckstine and Paul Pesco have been amazing to work with! They are the best team, and I am grateful to work with them. They provide creative suggestions for the track and do so much in the process of making my visions reality. It’s a very open and collaborative effort in the studio, and I am really learning the ropes in the recording studio.

What do you want those who hear it to think about when they listen to it?

I want whoever the audience may be to enjoy it. It’s a fun, light song about going out, having fun, and not worrying about anyone watching or judging. It’s about letting loose and being authentically you.

We’re in the middle of festival season – do you have any tour dates or performances lined up?

I do not have any tour dates or performances lined up but hopefully, in the future! I can’t wait to put my band together for live shows!

In this day and age, social media is pretty much vital to and for any artist, but how do you find it? Is it something you’re happy to engage with and enjoy, or are you warier of the power it can and does hold over a society/an audience/fanbase?

I love social media. Although it can drain your mental health, if you focus on yourself on social media, it is a fantastic creative outlet to grow your brand and reach fans directly. Much like music, you hopefully find your own creative voice and muse to keep things interesting. You can create whatever you want for yourself. You can post whatever, be whoever, and it becomes almost empowering. It honestly depends on how you use it. It can build you up or break you down, but I always try to stay positive.

It’s a little hard to believe, but we’re over halfway through 2022 already. With that in mind, what can you tell us what the rest of the year has in store for you?

I have so much planned for the next few months, and I am so excited! My single “Boy” is dropping on September 16th, along with a lyric video. Following “Boy”, I have a few more singles lined up, and I am so excited for everyone to hear!
