VIDEO PREMIERE: Lola Wild – Second Hand Love

VIDEO PREMIERE: Lola Wild - Second Hand Love

Following the release of their two previous singles, ‘Sand’ and ‘Mirabella,’ London-based indie duo Lola Wild released their ‘Strange Shapes’ EP and its third single, ‘Second Hand Love’ on June 30th. ‘Second Hand Love’ also sees a retro music video from the duo, with Sian Barnett taking on multiple characters in a comical 1950s setting which XS Noize is pleased to exclusively premiere today.

Lola Wild’s love of film noir was what first brought vocalist Barnett and multi-instrumentalist George Godfrey together, and remains a theme throughout each release. Due to the pandemic, Lola Wild has creatively directed and edited their music videos themselves, utilizing projectors to explore various scenes. The accompanying music video for ‘Second Hand Love’ acts as an ode to film noir as Barnett plays poker and dances in a casino.

Strange Shapes’ acts as an ode to Lola Wild’s retro and cinematic aesthetic, each release honoring the duo’s retro-fitted style. Citing classic singers such as Billie Holiday and Roy Orbison as sonic influences, Lola Wild describes their sound as “the likely product of Beach House hanging out with Tarantino.” Speaking on the new single, Multi-instrumentalist George Godfrey says

“I came up with the core of the song just hours after Sian and I first met and discussed putting the band together. We had been sitting outside a pub in Dalston, talking about artists like Billie Holiday, Nick Cave, Angel Olsen and Beach House… and we immediately had a clear vision for the direction the music should take. I came up with the bassline in my head whilst on the bus, before even getting home. I then sent Sian that first demo the next day and we had our first song more or less done by the weekend.”

Lola Wild’s debut EP works to pull listeners into early 1960s nostalgia with a modern edge. First getting together in 2020, their sound acting as a conduit for the background in jazz and love of 1960s pop and modern indie.

“When George sent over the guitar I immediately associated it with my current mood at the time. “It felt like I was on a bike with a broken chain” – lockdown was a shell shock of a ride to stay still on whilst simultaneously craving change and distractions. It was virtually impossible to not spend a lot of time stuck in my own head.” – Sian Barnett

Lola Wild stepped onto the scene earlier this year with their debut single ‘Sand,’ which was shortly followed by ‘Mirabella.’ The project has quickly garnered acclaim from the likes of Rolling Stone, Louder Than War, Wonderland, and Impose Magazine, and has also seen support from Amazing Radio and Radio X.
