The ongoing war in Ukraine has brought countries worldwide together in support of the millions affected by it on a scale not seen in; it could be argued, decades. Numerous individuals and companies alike are dedicating their time and resources to help; taking in refugees, donating to organisations like the Red Cross, and in the case of Valerie Ghent, writing and releasing a new song to raise funds for a nonprofit to help those children whose lives have been turned upside down by the conflict.
Raised in a very musical family and as a multi-talented singer, songwriter, musician, producer and engineer, Ghent knows exactly what it takes to make music with meaning. Her evocative voice moves and inspires people with her lyrics, and her new single is easily her most powerful – and personal – to date.
She shares of the release: "'When the Birds Stop Singing' is an anti-war song I wrote in March 2022 at the beginning of the war in Ukraine. Some of my ancestors come from Ukraine and Russia, and my grandmother and her sisters fled St. Petersburg on foot in 1919. I've often wondered what my grandmother went through in order to survive, and suddenly I could feel her pain in the eyes of Ukrainian mothers, grandparents and children fleeing their homes.
I am donating proceeds of "When the Birds Stop Singing" to the Ukrainian nonprofit Prostir Radity, which provides an innovative healing program for children in Ukraine impacted by the war. To contribute and help children in Ukraine, download the song on Bandcamp where you can give as much as you want."
She goes on to add: "My heartfelt gratitude to Bashiri Johnson (percussion), Bar Scott (backing vocals), Dave Eggar (cellos), Phil Faconti (guitar), Jérôme Buigues (mix), Greg Calbi (mastering), and Alyona Chukanova who introduced me to the wonderful people at Prostir Radity. This music wouldn't exist without you."
