TRACK PREMIERE: GFE - ’70s Gone’ - Listen Now

GFE is a London based Post Punk band made up of Matt Fletcher (singer/guitarist) & Tom Beal (bassist.) Matt & Tom first met one another at the Royal Oak pub in East London when Tom was in the band Splashh and Matt was working on a solo EP. The pair got chatting at the bar and discovered they were both musicians that shared a love of Wire & Spiritualized, in light of this they arranged a jam & the following week they entered a studio space together, they have been writing as a duo ever since.

After Splashh disbanded & Matt’s solo EP was set back due to losing his voice from vocal nodules for an entire year, in Matt’s words “a socially isolating experience” both of them decided to take the songs they’d been working on and form a new band. “GFE”  was officially formed in the summer of 2018.

After a few rehearsals, the band (along with friends Oscar Roberton on drums and Dave Bardon on guitar) bundled a set of songs together & played their debut show supporting Yak at The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston. The show received a rapturous response from those in attendance & off the back of the success of their debut show the band felt inspired to not only build their own East London studio, giving them a permanent writing, recording & rehearsal space, but also start their own in-house label “Outpatient Records” to cover the release side of things.

In Sept 2018 a demo of their track “Useless Memories” was picked up by French fashion label AMI & used in their fall/winter 2018 campaign video. In recent months, the band have been holed up in their studio space working on a debut album & shooting the video for debut single ’70s Gone’ –  which you can watch below.

An energetic number ’70s Gone’ is bold, brash & hook-laden. The song is a post-punk assault of distorted wah pedal guitar riffs & hypnotic ‘The Damned’ esque drone notes on synth to accompany. Beal’s bass grooves like a Death In Vegas track whilst Matt wails & croons over the top.

“70’s Gone” being a metaphor for moving away from a dark period in Matt’s life as well as a departing from antiquated masculine stereotypes associated with guitar music.  All in all, an exciting taste of what’s to come from East London’s newest Post Punk upstarts.

To celebrate its launch, Outpatient Records are giving them away the first 300 7inch copies of ‘70s Gone’ for FREE at gfeband.com
