EP REVIEW: WESSON – Stay the Same

WESSON

UK-based indie/alt-rock quartet WESSON has unveiled their latest musical offering, the four-track acoustic EP titled Stay the Same. This captivating release features three tracks from their previous album, All We Are, alongside a compelling new single, the eponymous title track.

In delving into the essence of the title track, WESSON sheds light on a character grappling with negativity, seeking external solutions rather than embarking on internal growth and positive change. The band eloquently captures the struggles of an ungrateful individual, unable to appreciate life’s blessings and fervently wishing for change, only to find themselves trapped in a cycle of stagnation or worsening circumstances.

At the helm of WESSON is the talented singer-songwriter Chris Wesson, joined by the skilled musicians Callum on bass, Jimmy on guitar, and Dale on drums. Together, they craft music that seamlessly blends melodic allure with profound lyrical depth.

Having graced stages across the UK alongside renowned acts such as Space, The Bluetones, Callum Beattie, and Lucy Spraggan, WESSON has garnered attention from elite media outlets and amassed an impressive number of streams on platforms like Spotify.

The EP kicks off with the title track, a composition that unfolds with a low-slung, swaying melody adorned by soft, layered harmonies. Drawing inspiration from the likes of The Kinks, the song exhibits a gentle, creamy flow complemented by insightful lyrics. Despite its stripped-down folk-rock textures, the title track exudes a palpable sonic allure through its music and lush vocals.

Highlighted by a light, bouncy feel and retro-flavoured harmonies, “Second Chances” is an entry point into the EP. The concluding track, “All We Are,” captivates with hints of Latin sensuality in its intro, seamlessly transitioning into a graceful melody accentuated by velvety vocal harmonies.

Stay the Same is a meticulously crafted EP boasting warm melodies and delightful harmonies. WESSON’s artistry shines through in their thoughtful instrumentation, creating a musical tapestry that captivates the senses and leaves a lasting impression.
