ALBUM REVIEW: Napalm Death – Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism

Napalm Death

After five years pause, grindcore pioneers are finally going to present their newest LP. As always, Napalm Death making it was a degree of entrapment. Not only within the lyrics. But the presentation as well. Nearly black-metallic-type-of-tension became the basic feature of their long-play titled: Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism.

A few months after the release of Backlash Just Because EP, Napalm’s frontman – Barney Greenway noticed that it was basically experimental tendencies that they decided to explore within the newest LP. Partly yes and partly no. First of all, Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism is a progressive record much more than previous album Apex Predator. Much more than their usual contacts with almost-chaotic sound structures. A groovy hardcore-type of atmosphere follows you on through the record. Starting with the opening “Fuck The Factoid” and getting through trashy pieces, such as “Contagion” and “Fluxing The Muscle” Napalm Death created the proportion that, after all, became one of their most innovative records.

Mixing Discharge and Poison Idea type-of-tonalities the pioneers of grindcore are unafraid to explore something new. “Joie De Ne Pas Vivre” and “Amoral” are a good example of that. As well as good proof of their evolution.

Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism is not one of these overproduced-types-of-records. You can hear clearly guitar-overdubs and Danny Herrera’s drum-parts. They left the room for various instrumental types of passages ( an introduction to “Invigorating Clutch”) giving the listeners to feel not only chaotic-part of their sounding but also Napalm’s best feature – to create an incredibly powerful atmosphere.
