Will Butler + Sister Squares — Miles Francis, Julie Shore, Jenny Shore and Sara Dobbs — present their new single/video, ‘Arrow of Time’, from their forthcoming self-titled album out September 22nd on Merge Records. It follows their previously released single, ‘Long Grass’ — both being studio ideas originally aired out in live rooms on the band’s August 2022 tour. “People really liked this when we played it; a few people at the merch table were like, ‘Which record is this song on?’” says Butler.

Inspired by A Brief History of Time, Errol Morris’ acclaimed documentary about Stephen Hawking, ‘Arrow of Time’ offers an otherworldly groove so irresistible it nearly creates its own gravitational pull. “Hawking describes the concept, in paraphrase, as ‘you might see a teacup fall off a table and smash into bits, but you never see the bits come back together. Or if you did, you would instantly be aware that time is running backwards,’” Butler explains. “Lyrically, I feel like I was maybe trying to write a Pixies song about that idea — ‘Here comes your man,’ but instead of something coming, it’s just everything slowly dissolving into heat energy.”

This autumn, fans will have a chance to hear songs from Will Butler + Sister Squares fully realised for the first time. The tour kicks off at Elsewhere Zone One in the band’s hometown of Brooklyn, NY, in September before coming through Europe in November. A full list of UK/EU dates is below, and tickets are on sale now.

Additionally, Butler will score the upcoming Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson crime thriller, Lips Like Sugar.

After coming home from the August 2022 tour where ‘Arrow of Time’ was a fan favourite, the band regrouped at Figure 8 Studios in Brooklyn. “Will and I organically discovered our relationship as a production duo through making this album. We didn’t have to talk too much about things as they happened, because the music just flowed,” says Francis. “As a producer, working with Jenny, Julie, and Sara is the dream. They connect so innately. In one motion they can conjure a mood, or get at the root of a feeling.” Will Butler + Sister Squares, broadly, is equal parts from Figure 8, group experiments from Will’s basement, and sessions in Miles’ Synthia Studio.

At its core, Will Butler + Sister Squares is a record with a warm, humane soul. Created amongst friends and family, its 14 tracks present a cocoon of grooves that are tailor-fit for dancing around the living room with the ones you love or a packed venue with those looking to lose themselves to the rhythm.
