Track Of The Day: Okkervil River - "The Industry"

Okkervil River has released their new song and video “The Industry”, the second single from their forthcoming album ‘Away’, out September 9 on ATO Records.

Okkervil’s Will Sheff states “I wrote ‘The Industry’ quickly after getting some bad news,” and the song caustically surveys a music business that Sheff felt he no longer recognised. Likewise, in “The Industry” video directed by Christopher Good (Kevin Morby, Margaret Glaspy), Sheff inhabits an astronaut struggling to understand the world to which he has returned.

‘Away’ has earned early praise from the New York Times, Pitchfork, and NPR Music. It represents a turning point for Sheff, who wrote the album during a time of loss and change in his life. Sheff worked with an almost entirely new cast of musicians for this album, most of them coming from the jazz and avant-garde world, including members of yMusic, keyboardists Jared Samuel (Yoko Ono) and Brian Donohoe (Snarky Puppy), and arranger Nathan Thatcher (Nico Muhly, Kronos Quartet), among others. “This record was me taking my life back to zero and starting to add it all back up again, one plus one plus one,” says Sheff.
