Irish singer-songwriter THOM SOUTHERN shares his third single of 2024 ‘SIMILE BLUES’

THOM SOUTHERN

The Irish singer-songwriter and producer has been busy in 2023 writing and producing new material in his Belfast home studio. Now, he is releasing his third single of 2024, ‘SIMILE BLUES’, via his own indie label ‘Mighty Good Leader’.

“Simile Blues” is a powerful anthem of self-empowerment, capturing the journey of breaking free from the mental barriers that hinder one’s pursuit of dreams. Through playful and ironic similes, the song’s lyrics depict the protagonist embodying the strength and determination of various animals, such as swimming like a shark, charging like a bull, and standing like a giant.

These vivid comparisons serve as metaphors for the protagonist’s inner transformation as they shed self-doubt and embrace their own power. The production style pays homage to alternative rock legends like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Jack White, incorporating distorted blues guitar riffs and explosive drum sounds. This modern twist on a classic sound adds depth and intensity to the song’s message, creating a sonic landscape that mirrors the raw energy of a journey to liberation.

Thom Southern elaborates on the writing process and how the song came about in his home studio:
“I actually never planned on ‘Simile Blues’ becoming an official release for this project because it had always been more of a stripped back blue-grass song which I wrote on my acoustic guitar while listening to a lot of blues music like Lead Belly and Muddy Waters last year. It only really came together as a full production at the beginning of 2024 because I had an overwhelming urge one day to transform it from a totally acoustic track into something really in your face taking inspiration from some of my favourite bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The White Stripes. When it was finished I made a last minute decision to release it because it felt like it really connected well with what I’m doing at the moment. I’m so buzzed with the way it turned out .”
