DESTROYER - Shares new song ‘It Just Doesn’t Happen’

Dan Bejar has today shared a new single as Destroyer titled ‘It Just Doesn’t Happen’, from his upcoming album Have We Met out 31st January 2020 via Dead Oceans. Alongside, with London’s Village Underground already on sale, May dates in Leeds and Glasgow have also been announced (full EU dates can be found below).

The track leads with a signature Bejar vocal alongside sparse accompaniment, before a thrumming bassline and percussion propel the song forward – with sprinklings of frequent collaborator John Collins’ MIDI instrumentation throughout.

Slightly foreboding yet comforting in its delivery, “It Just Doesn’t Happen” plays into Bejar’s initial vision for Have We Met as a Y2K album. A statement from the band confirms “the songs do seem to point at a very modern dread—one that heightens the more you consider it.”

Speaking on the recording process of Have We Met, Bejar explained:

The record could have gone on and on, and the mixes kept evolving up until about a day before we sent them off to be mastered, which was also 48 hours before John and his wife went to the birthing centre, where their first child was born; our true deadline!”

Watch ‘It Just Doesn’t Happen’ – BELOW:

Thirteen albums in, Have We Met manages to meet somewhere between trademarks and new territory – atmospheric approximations of feeling and place, wry gut-punches of one-liners, and the deluge of energy meets a thematic catharsis of modern dread, delivered with an effortless, entrancing directness. But, no need to expound any further. He’s got it all spelt out for you in the music.
