Today XS Noize is pleased to premiere ‘Burn’ the new single from TEROUZ. TEROUZ is the guise of Cairo born illustrator/singer-songwriter Karim Terouz, who moved to Montreal in 2008. Before transforming his band into an electro-pop act, Karim fronted and managed his award-wining, brassy, folk/rock quintet ’TheRising Few’. He released his first album Sinners On St-Laurent in 2014 followed by his second ‘’AdultEntertainment’ in 2017.
In 2018 Karim re-invents his music by incorporating dance hall beats and synths into his 80s/90s alternative roots. He started playfully utilizing his signature ‘Bowie-esque’ vocals to re-emerge as a refreshingly unique variation of hypnotic, ‘noir’ alternative. The vocal swagger in the frontman’s first single ‘Outstanding’ is complemented by muscular, groovy bass lines and nostalgic, ’Knofler-ish’ guitar fills.
Originally politically charged, “Burn” was born from a place of anger and despair in 2015 when I heard about the Charlie Hebdo incident. The lyric ‘’some things are foul, but no one deserves to burn,” popped into my head.
Heavily influenced by my girlfriend at the time, she blasted me for it, demanding I write about love instead, explaining that people want passion instead. And so I began to envision a couple holding each other in an incinerating flame, changing that initial lyric to “some tame the fire, but some fires deserve to burn.”
