Scottish singer-songwriter and doctor in ‘the perception of sound’ Tommy Ashby, releases his 4 track ‘Golden Arrow EP’ along with Lead single Apollo (New Love) via Wow and Flutter Records on 26th April. You can listen to the EP exclusively on XS Noize today.
Tommy said about the ‘Golden Arrow’ EP “we often to feel different or like an outcast and it’s tempting to wallow in those feelings of doubt. But it’s the few deeper and more personal relationships that keep us checked in and feeling like life is meaningful and worth the effort.”
There’s a lot of contrast throughout the EP but the music lives in the same world, thanks to Grammy award winning Producer Sam Okell (John Grant, Graham Coxon) who instinctively knew when to leave a track striped back using Tommy’s pure vocal, acoustic guitar rhythms and just a few atmospheric touches and when to bring in much bolder production.
Tommy continued to talk about Lead single ‘Apollo (New Love)’ “This song was inspired by one particular night, I had been to a gig at Brixton Academy and much of the song describes what we experienced on the way home. London is a strange but magical place to travel through at late at night; the traffic has gone, everything kind of glows in the streetlight. I wanted to capture it all in this song. There’s an explosion of energy in the middle which represents Apollo shooting his golden arrows across the sky and finding new love”
Tommy Ashby’s background is a rather unusual one for a singer-songwriter. Awarded a PhD in the perception of sound before most of us have grown out of daily midday lie-ins. Tommy manages to blend a technical understanding of the way our brain processes sound with the undisputable pure creative energy of someone who grew up writing and playing music in the wilds of Scotland.
To date Tommy has garnered support from online media outlets such as Clash, Record Of The Day and Celebmix, as well as Fearne Cotton, Radio 2, Spotify editorial and major global syncs for Grey’s Anatomy, Netflix’s The Innocents and NBC’s Midnight Texas to name a few.
Tommy was the main support on Luke Sital Singh’s April 2019 UK tour and recently supported Scottish Band The Xcerts, Canadian singer-songwriter Josh Hyslop and toured the highlands with Sean McGowan. He has also toured the UK & Europe supporting Rhodes, Tom Speight and Nina Nesbitt and will be supporting Big Country in Scotland In June.
