Ahead of a string of huge UK festival headline dates this summer, Kasabian today release their joyously poppy new single ’Algorithms.’ Arriving as a standalone, fresh new offering, the track follows the band’s 2022 chart-topping, acclaimed album, The Alchemist’s Euphoria, out now on Columbia Records.

‘Algorithms’, a fresh new sound steeped in Kasabian’s trademark anthemic glory, addresses the pitfalls of the recent emergence of artificial intelligence in today’s society. “They’ll never feel love like us”, denounces Serge as he contemplates a future void of empathy. The record is co-produced with Mark Ralph (Years & Years, Hot Chip and Bad Boy Chiller Crew).

Serge further explains, ‘Algorithms’ is a song that explores the idea that robots can’t experience emotion and being in the moment, whereas humans can, and that is the beauty that separates us…for now.”

In a fitting collaboration, Kasabian partnered up with digital designers Uncanny for the mesmerising lyric video. Uncanny is the studio practice of Elliott Elder and George Muncey, with designer Ewan Leslie brought on board specifically for this project.

“The track distinguishes the difference between human and machine thought/emotion, so we employed a design process that makes a point of both physical and digital techniques wherever possible. Typesetting the artwork, preparing the video on screen, and then physically scanning the artwork and re-filming the animation with hand drawn markings overlaid.” they explain.

Facial animations were created by feeding a neural network imagery of Kasabian themselves, asking it to dream up beings that exist latently between the band. The final file was then re-filmed on a bespoke display, not illuminated by RGB pixels but instead magnets, physically moving coloured particles around the screen.”
