Los Angeles-based indie pop-funk outfit Thumpasaurus recently released their latest single/music video, “Lipstick Makeup.” According to Thumpasaurus, “‘Lipstick Makeup’ is about saying f*ck it. I’m letting my freak out tonight and getting real nice with it. It’s about being tired of all the pressures of life that make me live in anxiety and prevent me from being my authentic self. Tonight, it’s different because I’m on my way to the dance party…”

Renowned for their single, “Struttin’,” which went viral as a massive song/commercial sync, with more than 30 million views on YouTube, Thumpasaurus is currently touring the U.S. on their ‘Struttin’ Across America’ tour, followed by taking off on their first European tour, followed by coming back to the states for several high-profile music festival performances.

XS Noize spoke with Thumpasaurus to discover more about the inspiration behind “Lipstick Makeup,” who is in the band, and their thoughts on touring.

What three things can’t you live without?

Aero press coffee, music, and Paul Cornish.

What inspired your new single/music video, “Lipstick Makeup?”

We made the song ‘Lipstick Makeup’ on a retreat together, so I feel like it reflects our friendship as a band and community that we fostered over the eight years we have worked together. The video is pure director genius from Dylan Woodley.

Who directed the video and where was it shot?

Dylan Woodley directed it, and we filmed it in a warehouse in Los Angeles.

Give us a little insight into the sense of humour behind this video and the hilarious “Struttin” video.

‘Struttin’ video was truly a happy accident. We tend to leave a lot to chance while also making sure everything is captured in very high quality. We’ve gotten very lucky with this combination.

Who is in Thumpasaurus and which instrument do they play?

Lucas Tamaren – guitar/vox, Logan Kane- bass, Paul Cornish – keys, Henry Was – drums, Henry Solomon – sax, Ben Benjamin – laptop visuals /vox.

You’re off on a massive tour of the U.S., followed by Europe. What are the best and worst parts of touring?

We truly love being together all the time and playing music all the time so we love almost everything about touring. The worst part is having to pee, and Henry won’t pull the van over.

How did you get started in music? What’s the backstory there?

We all come from very diverse backgrounds when it comes to music. Thumpasaurus started as a folk-rock party band in college that evolved in an insane way. We treasure that evolution very much.

Where are you from?

Thumpasaurus was created in Los Angeles California.

Did your hometown impact your sound?

Absolutely. We love the Los Angeles music scene and feel so fortunate to be a part of it.

Are there any recording techniques you like to use in the studio?

Yea but it’s a secret.

Which artists in your opinion are killing it right now?

Roy Haynes.

What’s your definition of success?

Love.
