VIDEO PREMIERE: Jennifer Crook – Aftermath

Jennifer Crook - Aftermath

‘Aftermath’ is the rocking new single from Jennifer Crook: the fourth single from her eagerly awaited new album ‘The Broken Road Back Home’ due for release on September 30th, 2022. Musically rooted in the world of Folk, Roots and Americana, Jennifer’s classic songwriting, rich with poetic imagery and earthy wisdom, is both timeless and right on time.

Jennifer says, “I wrote this outburst one full moon night when it felt like ‘living with a human heart gets harder every day’. Whether it’s a failed love affair, a natural disaster, or the powers that be yet again turning a blind eye to humanity, ‘there’s only devastation down a road to discontent’ is always a satisfying line to sing (and not just because of the alliteration). Unfortunately, recently on the news, we’ve heard the word ‘aftermath’ time and time again.”

The new album was co-produced with multi-platinum award-winning recording engineer Stuart Bruce (Band-Aid, Yes, Van Morrison, Stevie Wonder, Art Garfunkel, to name a few). He also plays acoustic and electric bass on the record.

The stellar new line-up includes Joe Coombs on electric guitars, who has toured with the likes of Yola, Annie Keating and Robert Vincent. Dan Moore on Hammond and Wurlitzer, who has worked with a wide range of artists, including Percy Sledge, Anna Calvi and Beth Orton. Dan Temmink, a film and TV composer, also plays keys on the album, and Grammy award-winning musician Robert Brian (Goldfrapp, Loreena McKennitt, Siouxie Sioux) plays drums.

When speaking about the creation of the song, Jennifer explains, “I asked Stuart if he could play a falling bass line at the end of the verse, and I love the sense of urgency it creates before it rolls on. We recorded the backing track live in the studio. When it came to the solo, I asked Joe to play something very simple, slow, and low and he totally smashed it. The song has an exuberance which is great to perform live, but I was careful during the band recordings to make sure the frustration didn’t get ’rounded off’ into something more amenable and that the track maintained the forward movement. Stuart tried to persuade me to let him add cowbell and hand claps but I was concerned it might sound too happy. So he recorded them when I wasn’t around and just snuck them into the mix… now I wouldn’t want it to be without them!”

“To start with, I wasn’t sure if this song would make the album, but I’m thrilled at how it turned out and what everyone brought to the track. Every time the final ‘Phoenix rising from the ashes’ vocals kick in; I get the feeling I intended when I wrote it… that personally or collectively we can, and will, rise up again.”
