Jet guitarist Cam Muncey announces his debut solo album with the release of soulful, piano pop gem ‘Take A Chance’

Today Impressed Recordings release the single ‘Take A Chance’, the first track to be taken from Cam Muncey’s forthcoming debut solo album, Delusions of Grandeur.

After years serving as an artistic sparring partner in Jet, the band Muncey formed in 2001 with brothers Nic and Chris Cester who spearhead the band’s songwriting, Muncey has reveled in taking the creative lead on his debut solo album.

Cam Muncey & the Delusions of Grandeur is a daring and adventurous trip into the wild, one that explores a sonic landscape Muncey has left untouched in his work with the band.

This exemplified perfectly on debut solo single ‘Take A Chance’. A swirling, soulful piano-pop gem, it soundtracks a tale of the musician’s time in his then north London neighborhood during the 2011 London riots.

Muncey was inspired and fired up to write songs following Jet’s time spent supporting Bruce Springsteen. After he got to grips with first GarageBand and then Logic, a vision for something wholly his own slowly came into view.

Listen to ‘Take A Chance’ – BELOW:

The album was recorded in just 30 days, with award-winning Australian producer Jan Skubiszewski, Jet bassist Mark Wilson and drummer Peter Marin. The result is an expansive and mellow debut, packed full of catchy, often introspective songs, full of shimmering sonics, taking in his love of dreamy shoegazing, melodic guitar-pop, 80s indie, swaying soul, atmospheric art-rock, pulling from artists such as The Smiths, Talk Talk, Curtis Mayfield, R.E.M., Mazzy Star, The War On Drugs, Roxy Music and more.

Guided by Muncey’s warm, melodious vocals, it’s an album that pulls you in and takes you on a journey. On the way, you’ll pass by the driving, widescreen rocker Already Gone and the lilting country-soul of Don’t Fade On Me; hazy, psychedelic Americana (No Rock’n’Roll Star, in which the singer questions his rock star credentials); minor-chord splendour (stirring torch song I’ve Been Low); kaleidoscopic psychedelic-rock grooves (the Tame Impala-ish Breathing Again and the shimmering; retro-futuristic pop of Arrhythmia) hypnotic; space-y ballads (Daylight, Dark Mind, which sees Muncey revisiting the nocturnal-heavy routines of life in his twenties); and the breezy, catchy 80s pop number, Friendly.

On his debut album, Cam Muncey has carved out something for himself when he could’ve just let his very successful band do the talking. It has paid off. Cam Muncey &the Delusions of Grandeur is a record to treasure.
