EP REVIEW: Rosellas – Every Beautiful Night

Manchester indie-rock outfit Rosellas have been grafting hard since their first gig in July 2019. Through lockdown, COVID, and relentless touring, they’ve steadily built their reputation, selling out increasingly bigger venues and earning a loyal following. This year, they signed with Glasgow-based label First Run Records, a milestone that cements their rising status.

The band’s live energy has carried them to headline slots at Isle of Wight and Truck Festival’s This Feeling stage, a sold-out night at Manchester Academy 2, and a packed show for the Official Oasis Fan Club at The Grace — just before Oasis took over Wembley. In November, they step up again with a headline show at Manchester’s New Century Hall.

Rosellas — Drew Selby (vocals/guitar), Euan Mail (guitar), Ollie Appleby (bass), and Mark Zanker (drums) — draw from Manchester’s deep musical heritage while carving their own identity. Their influences range from The War on Drugs and The La’s to Pink Floyd and Ian Brown, with support already coming in from Radio X and BBC6 Music.

Their latest release, the five-track EP Every Beautiful Night, captures that live spark while showcasing a more refined, intentional songwriting approach. Opener “Surrounded By The Light” sets the tone with soaring guitars and lyrics about breaking free from darkness — uplifting, rousing, and made for big stages. “Happy Again” follows with a nod to Oasis-esque guitar lines, but its emotional depth and melodic sweep set it apart from mere nostalgia.

The current single “Get Over Yourself” brings an instantly catchy hook, its lyrics poking at self-importance while hinting at a wider frustration with the daily grind. As frontman Drew Selby puts it: “We write lyrics that fixate on the desire to wade through the daily monotony of working life, while focusing your mind on key elements that drive success, ambition, passion & determination.”

One of the standout moments is “Eyes of the World,” a song born during lockdown that blends Seahorses-like melodies with surreal, escapist imagery: “I’m gonna meet you on the astral plane where the worlds collide.” Dreamy closer “I’m in Love with A) Songbird” draws on Floydian strums and lush ’80s synth textures, creating a multi-layered track that drifts and soars as its title suggests.

With Every Beautiful Night, Rosellas deliver shimmering guitars, heartfelt lyricism, and melodies that feel both euphoric and reflective. It’s an EP that doesn’t just echo Manchester’s past — it points confidently to the band’s future.
