Vikings are arguably more popular in the mainstream than ever, thanks to the incredibly successful Vikings series from Michael Hirst and its spin-off, Vikings: Valhalla. Amazon Prime Video has seen the potential for other Vikings-themed series, and now has its own offering from Hirst on the way.
Bloodaxe has been confirmed and could be set to hit the platform in 2026 or 2027. There are no reports on who will be making the music for the show yet, but many fans will be hoping that Wardruna is involved again. The Norwegian group helped to add authenticity to the original, and their music added to the immersion.
Amazon’s Bloodaxe is the Newest Offering from Michael Hirst
Ever since Vikings was released in 2013, the Norse seafarers have been front and centre in the mainstream. Indeed, the greatest impact has been seen in the gaming market, where there are now countless titles based on Vikings. For instance, there’s the Megaways casino game, Vikings Unleashed Megaways, which takes players out to sea on a Viking ship. There’s also Fury of Odin Megaways, which taps into the mythology of the era.
Vikings’ popularity ensured that it lasted for six seasons, remaining strong even after Travis Fimmel’s Ragnar Lothbrok was killed off. In fact, the final seasons were just as strong as the early ones, which is why Vikings: Valhalla was released soon after the flagship series ended. Amazon has seen the future franchise potential of this period of history, and is set to release Bloodaxe. This is yet another offering from Hirst, who has proven his prowess in the genre already.
Wardruna’s Music Added Authenticity to the Original Series
One of the aspects that made the original Vikings so authentic and immersive was that it used Norwegian music. Wardruna featured heavily in the soundtrack to the History Channel show, working alongside Trevor Morris who was tasked with composing the score. The band’s musical style focuses on interpreting Nordic traditions, and many of the lyrics are written in Old Norse as well.
From their work on Vikings, Wardruna managed to reach a much wider audience and are now one of the best-known acts in this niche genre. It would make a lot of sense for Amazon to turn to them and Morris again for the Bloodaxe score, especially if they want to recreate the haunting brilliance of the original.
What Do We Know About the New Series?
Although no information has been released yet about the composers for Bloodaxe, there have been various details announced already. The show will be about the legendary Viking warrior, Erik Bloodaxe, and will take place during the 10th century.
The key cast members have also been confirmed, with Xavier Molyneux set to play the title character. He will be joined by Jessica Madsen as Gunnhild and Levi Miller as Haakon. Various other names such as Rod Hallett and Alina Tomnikov are also set to appear in key roles.
With Amazon developing Bloodaxe, the series has the potential to be the biggest Vikings offering to date. However, it’s important that the music is done right, which is why the studio should turn to Wardruna once again.
