It’s hard to deny the overall power of music to change our moods and opinions in ways nothing else really can. Today we’re highlighting just how powerful it can be and looking at some of the biggest areas where music has helped shape a romantic image that is shared around the world.
Casino
As it stands, the casino world is vast, with millions of players getting involved from all over the world. It has experienced a huge boost from the online era, allowing it to evolve in many ways from the classic experience. Apart from being available via smartphone, the industry has seen plenty of innovation such as new versions of old games, like the Spin Till You Win version of roulette or extravagant game shows such as Dream Catcher or Crazy Time.
This journey of evolution, however, began in the golden age of Las Vegas, and it’s impossible to separate great names like Frank Sinatra or Elvis Presley from that era. In fact, the bright and shining image of great fortune depicted in Viva Las Vegas single-handedly shaped opinions of casinos for decades to come and undoubtedly played a big role in the popularity that still exists today.
Driving
For many people, especially those on the daily commute stuck behind hundreds of other cars, driving is simply a tedious way of getting from point A to point B which is more weatherproof than walking. However, when people manage to escape from the traffic and find a big stretch of open road, you can almost guarantee that the music gets turned on. Suddenly, the old philosophy about the journey being more important than the destination becomes true.
The most fascinating thing is that the romantic ideal of driving can come in many different forms. Probably the best universal example would be Life is a Highway by country artist Rascal Flatts, an ode to the open road and just driving onward no matter what. For some though, the song of choice could be the angry Fuel by Metallica or the mellow Fast Car by Tracy Chapman, each giving an entirely different driving experience.
Space
Much like travelling the world was for explorers in the past, the great unknown of space is the next great frontier and so carries with it the old romantic ideals of brave humans setting forth on great journeys. As we edge closer and closer to regular spaceflight for the average person, many of us look back on the inspirations of the past with music being a major part of that.
Whether it’s the whimsical and dreamy Rocket Man by Elton John or the fantastical yet sombre work of David Bowie, a generation of musicians active around the 70s have crafted an image. In the heads of many space will forever be this incredible and overwhelming experience, even if it is inherently somewhat dangerous. As these songs were inspired by sci-fi before them, they would then inspire sci-fi in turn.
If you’ve been lucky enough to hear any of the songs above, the way you see these topics may have been forever changed without you even realizing. Perhaps look at your own playlists and see how else your world has been shaped by music!
