In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar sits down with James Graham and Andy MacFarlane — the creative core of The Twilight Sad — to talk about their powerful sixth album It’s The Long Goodbye. Watch the full XS Noize Podcast conversation below.

Written across a seven-year period, It’s The Long Goodbye became the band’s most personal and emotionally direct record to date. Much of the album was shaped during a difficult chapter in James Graham’s life, as he navigated his mother’s illness, his own struggles with mental health, and the weight of grief and loss.

During the conversation, James and Andy reflect on the long creative journey behind the record — from the early demos developed during lockdown to the moment the songs finally began to feel like a cohesive album.

In this wide-ranging conversation, the band open up about their creative partnership after nearly two decades of making music together, the way their songwriting process has evolved over time, and why this album demanded a level of honesty that earlier records sometimes kept hidden behind metaphor.

They also discuss the band’s close relationship with Robert Smith of The Cure, who contributes guitar and six-string bass to several tracks after years of friendship and touring together.

The conversation also looks back at the band’s early years — from their debut album Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters through the evolution of their sound and the challenges of sustaining a band across two decades in the music industry.

Along the way, James speaks candidly about the emotional themes at the heart of the new record, how songwriting helped him process personal loss, and why he hopes the album might resonate with listeners going through similar experiences.

Whether you’ve followed The Twilight Sad since their earliest recordings or are discovering the band for the first time, this conversation offers a thoughtful and revealing look at the people, experiences, and emotions behind one of their most important albums.
