Today, The Milk release the video for their latest single, ‘The Middle’, the third single to be taken from their forthcoming sophisticated new album Borderlands, out 19 September on WLS Records.
“The Middle’ began life as a demo for The Milk’s Favourite Worry album (BBC 6 Music ‘Album Of The Year’). Whilst it didn’t make it onto that record as it was deemed ‘too dramatic’, for Borderlands the band knew the song’s drama would be a perfect fit.
Developing the song with a signature choir, full silver screen strings and horns and a jazzier rhythmic bounce, the track began to make a lot of sense again. Lyrically, the song explores the idea of a collapse in communication in a connected world. The danger of vitriolic binary partisanship and how in a time where information flows freely, we are further than ever from a consensus on truth and reality.
Along with recent singles ‘I Need Your Love’ and ‘A Time To Let Go’, ‘The Middle’ is a taster of what to expect from The Milk’s forthcoming album, Borderlands. Their most ambitious to date, the album features outstanding songwriting, deftly served by extraordinary musicianship, mixed with ambitious arrangements and world-class production. A lovingly crafted sonic memoir, it fuses The Milk’s love of ‘60s soul with elements of modern funk and jazz, choral harmonies reminiscent of Kamasi Washington and Michael Kiwanuka, augmented with sweeping horns, lush strings, and in-the-pocket grooves.
