Melodic math rock, twisted acid blues, and fuzzy prog with lyrics infused with modern poetry—Zouz combines virtuosity and creativity. The opening track of the album “Jours de cendre” by the Montreal noise rock trio zouz, “Miroirs” sets the stage for a bold and intense exploration. It’s a heavy, explosive, visceral, and furious song where experimental hip hop and industrial rock influences collide.
Written after a conversation among friends about ‘catoptrophobia’ — the persistent fear of mirrors and one’s own reflection — “Miroirs” stands as a cry of rebellion against the labels imposed on us. Through a rhythm and riffs that are both hypnotic and unsettling, it evokes the anxiety of being trapped in boxes and stereotypes.
zouz’s second full-length album, “Jours de cendre”, will be released digitally on October 24, 2024, then physically a month later under the Simone Records label.
In response to a need for a free and effervescent musical playground, the power trio zouz was formed in 2016. David Marchand (vocals & guitar), Étienne Dupré (bass), and Francis Ledoux (drums) explore the unpredictable and give themselves the necessary space to compose instinctively, paving the way for a liberated, rich, and incisive rock.
The explorations made on EP1 (2017) and EP2 (2018) allowed zouz to define their own codes, and their first full album, Vertiges, was released in October 2021. This album has truly come to life on stage since its release, with the band performing over 130 shows across Quebec, France, and the United States. With Simone Records, the band begins a new chapter that will take shape this October with the release of their intense and abrasive second album, “Jours de cendre”, benefiting from the outside perspective of co-producer Alexandre Martel.
On stage, zouz are a force to be reckoned with, they take no prisoners with their exciting and yet unadorned performances. Almost without interruption, the trio, accompanied by backing vocalist Shaina Hayes, interprets their songs with precision and sensitivity. In addition to having brought the compositions to an impressive musical level, the members of zouz, dedicated to their art, give themselves body and soul to put on a memorable show.
