INTERVIEW: Kate Voegele of Your Future Ghost Talks New Single ‘I’m Like Money,’ Upcoming Album, and What’s Next

Your Future Ghost

Kate Voegele is a name many are familiar with, largely thanks to her appearances as Mia Catalano in the hit series One Tree Hill. Not only did that show allow Kate to show off her acting skills, but it also provided a huge platform for her to showcase her incredible vocal talent.

Over the years, Kate, like many other artists, has grown and developed both personally and professionally and has never been afraid to try new things. Most recently, alongside her solo career, she’s partnered/teamed up with long-time friend Michael Grubbs to create Your Future Ghost.

The duo have established themselves as an incredibly versatile pair; they’re both actors, song-writers and performers, and their versatility can be heard through their songs, making YFG a band that it’s hard not to be impressed by. Their latest single “I’m Like Money” sees the pair at their most expressive, and is a fantastic tease as to what fans can expect from their upcoming album. Here, Kate shares more details about the latest release, talks tour plans for 2025 and reflects on her highlights of 2024.

Your Future Ghost

Nice to chat with you again – how have the last few months been?

It’s been a really exciting year for the band – we’ve spent the past few months finalizing every mix, filming a music video for our new single, “I’m Like Money,” and getting excited to drop this album soon!

You’ve just dropped your latest single ,”I’m Like Money” – how would you describe it in four words?

Four words to describe “I’m Like Money…” – In four words, this song is basically a fun, unhinged, raging party.

How would you say this song compares/differs to your previous releases of the year – “Pritty” and “The Only One” – and how does it showcase a different side of you as people and as a duo?

This song really feels to me like it epitomizes the vibe of our band. “Pritty” showcases the same gritty, unapologetic sound that this song has, and “The Only One” has a contagious melodic hook that I think really characterizes our music. “I’m Like Money” kind of has the whole package, and lyrically we just really let ourselves go wild with this one. We didn’t hold anything back, and the song truly doesn’t give a fuck, and I think that’s a value that’s really central to who we are as a band and individual people.

Where did the idea/inspiration for the video come from?

This music video was a really special creative collaboration that started when Mike and I told our director, Teck, that we thought the video for this song should essentially be some kind of mini horror movie. We floated all kinds of wild ideas, including one where I was being chased on a janky old go-cart track by a bunch of dudes, and then we realized it would actually be a lot cooler if I was the villain chasing the dudes. Teck, our amazing director, came up with the idea to cast me as this kind of gigantic desert alien monster, and after that all the pieces just fell into place. We loved the idea of Mike and I being this duo of hustlers out in the middle of nowhere who lure in groups of greedy dudes and then ultimately turn them into money. It really felt like a fun way to play off of the song’s theme of how some people will always want to get close to you, change you, and shape you into who they want you to be, and how sometimes karma’s gonna get them for that.

The track is featured on your upcoming album. The last time we conversed, you couldn’t pick a favourite track from the collection – is that still the case?

Personally, I think this is my favorite track from the album right now, but it kind of changes every day because I’m just so proud of every single one of these songs. There are still so many of them people haven’t heard, and they all showcase something unique about the band. I really can’t wait for fans to hear this album as a whole body of work.

Are you touring/performing anywhere at the moment? When can fans on both sides of the Atlantic see you next?

I have a couple solo shows coming up before the holidays on the east coast, but we’re really eager to get some Your Future Ghost tour dates on the books for 2025. It’s an entirely different experience hearing these songs live, and it’s so different from what either of us have done in our solo careers, so I’m really looking forward to bringing fans into what a YFG live show looks and feels like – and how it’s different from anything they’ve seen from us – next year when the album drops.

Finally, it’s hard to believe, but the year’s end is fast approaching. With that in mind, what have been your personal and professional highlights of the year, and what can you tease about what you have in store for 2025?

This year was huge for YFG, and it was incredible to see the response to the 3 singles we released. Filming our first music video, playing our first gig as a band, and DIY screen-printing our first run of band t-shirts by hand were massive milestones for a project I’m so passionate about that’s been years in the making. 2025 is gonna be even bigger for us with our debut album dropping, and we can’t wait to bring fans along for everything that comes with that. We have big plans for YFG next year and can’t wait to share more with you very soon!
