Background
Dua Lipa was born in London on August 22, 1995, to Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, who had fled Kosovo two years earlier because of the Bosnian War.
The family settled in Camden as refugees, where her father pursued dentistry, and her mother studied law, both working waiting jobs. This upbringing deeply influenced Dua’s strong work ethic.
During her primary school years, Dua took cello lessons and attended singing classes at the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After relocating to Kosovo with her family in 2008, she returned to London at 15. While completing A-levels in Politics, Psychology, English, and Media Studies, she continued weekend classes at Sylvia Young and modelled for brands such as ASOS and Topshop.
Though born in England, Dua Lipa’s first language was Albanian, reflecting her parents’ heritage, and she spent two years in Kosovo after completing primary school.
In 2006, when Lipa was 11, her parents felt it was safe to return home and relocated with her and her younger siblings, Rina and Gjin, to Kosovo. However, she struggled with her language skills at school and realizing her ambitions required her to be in London, she soon returned to pursue her dreams.
Inspired by her father, who was part of a rock band named Oda and regularly played music from artists like David Bowie, Prince, and Bob Dylan at home, Dua Lipa knew from a young age that she wanted to become a pop star.
At just 14, she started uploading covers of her favourite tracks by artists such as P!nk and Nelly Furtado on YouTube.
Rise to stardom
In 2015, Lipa secured a contract with Warner Music Group, and by August of that year, her debut single, “New Love”, was launched. However, her rise to stardom came with the release of her follow-up single “Be the One” two months later. The track topped the charts in Poland, Slovakia, and Belgium, and also ranked among the top 10 in over 11 European nations. It gained popularity on the radio in New Zealand and Australia, achieving positions six and 20, respectively. Her subsequent releases only boosted her success.
At the beginning of 2016, Lipa embarked on a UK and European tour and introduced her third single, “Last Dance”, followed by “Hotter than Hell”, the track that cemented her mainstream breakthrough. Later that summer, her single “Blow Your Mind” brought her recognition in the U.S., earning her a spot on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”.
Radical optimism album
Dua thrilled her fans in March 2024 by announcing the title of her much-anticipated third studio album, “Radical Optimism”, which dropped on 3rd May 2024. The album, featuring hit tracks like “Houdini,” “Training Season,” and “Illusion,” marked her first full-length release since 2020’s “Future Nostalgia”, which she toured in 2022.
Before the album’s release, three singles—”Houdini,” “Training Season,” and “Illusion”—were launched, each securing a spot in the top ten of the UK Singles Chart.
In the UK, “Radical Optimism” debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart, marking the biggest opening week for a British female artist in three years. The album will accompany the “Radical Optimism Tour”, which kicks off in November 2024.
Dua Lipa revealed that the album’s title was inspired by the concept of “navigating chaos with grace and believing you can withstand any challenge.” With this project, she offers fresh perspectives on life, sharing valuable insights into relationships and the single experience.
Grossing records
The “Boys Will Be Boys” crooner soared to the top of the charts with first-week sales totalling 46,298 units, including 13,388 CDs, 16,772 vinyl records, 4,779 cassettes, 1,414 digital downloads, and 9,945 units from streaming equivalents. As the week’s highest seller on vinyl, “Radical Optimism” also claimed the top spot on the official vinyl chart.
The album immediately claimed the No. 1 spot in 11 countries, including the UK, where it marked the biggest album debut of 2024 by a UK artist and achieved the highest first-week sales by a British female since 2021. In the US, “Radical Optimism” entered at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart and secured the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200, making it Dua Lipa’s best sales week to date.
With its first-week numbers, “Radical Optimism” recorded the second-highest sales of the year, trailing only Taylor Swift’s “The Tortured Poet Department”. It also holds the distinction of the highest debut for a British female artist since Adele’s “30”, which launched with 261,856 units in November 2021.
