Alice Ivy – Do What Makes You Happy

Naarm/Melbourne-based artist, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Alice Ivy unveils her third album, Do What Makes You Happy, via Helix Records. Following her acclaimed 2020 release Don’t Sleep, which featured the standout single “In My Mind,” this new album sees Ivy expanding her sound and artistic vision through a vibrant array of collaborations.

The album enlists an impressive roster of talent, including Kah-Lo, BJ The Chicago Kid, Låpsley (“Popstar”), Mallrat and Jelani Blackman (“Broke My Heart”), and Mayer Hawthorne (“Howlin’ At The New Moon”). These collaborations add a rich, multifaceted texture to Ivy’s already dynamic sound.

Reflecting on the album, Ivy shares, “Do What Makes You Happy was written at a time when so many people were finally experiencing the freedom to pursue what brings them joy again. That sense of liberation is woven into the production, every vocal line, and even the visuals. I like to think of every layer of this record as art at its purest and most natural form.”

With 12 tracks, Do What Makes You Happy is a kaleidoscopic journey through funk, R&B, pop, and soul, blending nostalgic elements with modern innovation. Highlights abound, starting with the funky, retro-infused “Howlin’ At The New Moon,” featuring Mayer Hawthorne. This track channels ‘70s dancefloor magic with its lively grooves and infectious energy.

A standout moment, “Popstar,” featuring Låpsley, offers a darker, more hypnotic tone. Built on crunchy, echo-laden rhythms and Låpsley’s Siren-like vocals, the track exudes a sultry, smouldering allure that’s entrancing and deeply evocative.

“Criminal,” with contributions from Kah-Lo and BJ The Chicago Kid, pulses with a galvanizing beat, layered harmonics, and an edgy vocal delivery. Its ominous undertones make it one of the album’s most intriguing tracks.

On the smoother side, “Broke My Heart,” featuring Mallrat and Jelani Blackman, floats on lush, dreamy textures. The track’s R&B core is adorned with ethereal tones that enhance its emotional resonance. Meanwhile, “Wildlife” captivates with its low-slung, infectious rhythm and smoky, wistful vocals, evoking buoyant yet introspective emotions.

Another gem is “Dandelion,” a sublime fusion of R&B, soul, and funk-lite. Its velvety vocals, radiant harmonies, and experimental pop nuances make it arguably the album’s finest moment, showcasing Ivy’s ability to blend sensuality with innovation.

Interconnected yet varied, Do What Makes You Happy is delightfully retro and refreshingly modern. Alice Ivy delivers a cohesive, joy-infused record that celebrates freedom, creativity, and the art of collaboration.
